Students’ Art and Performances Featured at Downtown Scranton’s First Friday

Who knew that guy who sits a row ahead of you in physics class can break dance? Or that the girl who lived in your residence hall is great soprano? Discover the hidden talents of your classmates at First Friday Scranton’s “College Night,” set for Friday, Oct. 1, from 6-9 p.m.
University of Scranton students will join students from other area colleges to celebrate the arts during downtown Scranton’s monthly art walk, where downtown venues feature the work of area artists, ranging from photography, sculpture and jewelry to live music and performance art.
Scranton student performances include Urban Beats, the University’s hip-hop dance team, which will ‘bust their moves’ at the Vintage Theater, 119 Penn Avenue. Men and Women for Octaves, an a cappella club, will show off its range in a performance at Northern Light Espresso Bar, 538 Spruce Street. Also, the artistry of students in the photography club will be on display at Green Being, 334 Adams Avenue. The exhibit is themed “Hermeneutics,” the study of interpretation.
As part of First Friday, a lecture for the exhibit “Variations: Photographs by Carl Backlund” will take place Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. in the Rose Room in Brennan Hall. Local photographer Carl Backlund will discuss his photographs and faculty member and Hope Horn Gallery director Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., will explore the context of Backlund’s work. A reception will follow in Hope Horn Gallery, Highland Hall, from 6 to 8 p.m.
All First Friday events are free and open to the public.
