Fr. Joseph Kakalec, S.J., to be Remembered Sept. 25

The Scranton Jesuit Community and St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Parish will host a memorial for Fr. Joseph Kakalec, S.J., on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Walter Ciszek Hall.

Byzantine Vespers for will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m., followed by a talk by Fr. Leonard Martin, S.J., about Fr. Kakalec’s life and work. There will then be a Panachida service for the repose of Fr. Kakalec, followed by social time for those in attendance.

Through the efforts of Greek Catholic Union Lodge # 31, the parishioners of St. John’s will be making a donation to the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in memory of Fr. Kakalec. Fr. Thomas E. Roach, S.J., rector of the Scranton Jesuit Community, noted, “We are pleased that the life of this good priest and faithful Jesuit is being celebrated, and that the work for the poor that occupied so much of his life is being continued.”

Fr. Kakalec, a native of McAdoo, died on Aug. 26, 2007. He had spent much of his career doing community organizing in the Philadelphia area, where one of his colleagues referred to him as the “George Washington of the modern neighborhood movement.” After retirement, he was in residence at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Scranton, where Fr. Frank Twardzik SDB is Administrator.
