Family Weekend Liturgy Slated for Sept. 25
Sister Mary Owens to Speak at University Sept. 27
Her lecture, which is free and open to the public, will focus on the role of Nyumbani, which means "home" in Swahili, in providing a loving home, medicine, education, community outreach and village-based elder and orphan care to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. She will highlight how Nyumbani is catering for the educational and psychosocial needs of vulnerable children who have been affected (orphaned) or infected by HIV/AIDs pandemic through both the institutional-based and community-based care of these children. There is a long-standing relationship between Nyumbani and The University of Scranton - many students from the University have visited and given service to Nyumbani from 2004 through the International Service Program (ISP) to the recently concluded graduate travel course to Kenya, summer 2010. Additionally, Fr. Angelo D'Agostino, S.J., who with Sr. Mary was a founder of Children of God Relief, received the University's Pedro Arrupe Award posthumously in 1997.
Born in Ireland, Sister Mary holds a bachelor's degree (Hons) from University College, Dublin, as well as a master's degree from Trinity College, Dublin. She also recently undertook a Masters Course at the Graduate School in Berkeley, Calif. Sister Mary arrived in Kenya in 1969 and after a short period was appointed Headmistress at Loreto High School, Limuru. Sister Mary enjoyed a distinguished career in education which also included a period as Superior of Loreto Convent, Msongari, in Nairobi, before being appointed Provincial Superior of the Loreto Sisters in Eastern Africa in 1996, a position that she held for six years.
