Royal Athletics Review — Monday, Sept. 13 – Sunday, Sept. 19

Cross-Country
The men's and women's cross-country teams did not compete during the period.
Field Hockey (3-3 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The field hockey team split a pair of games at Fitzpatrick Field during the period, defeating Immaculata, 3-0, on Thursday, Sept. 16, before dropping a 3-1 decision to King's College on Saturday, Sept. 18.
Defensively, the Royals limited Immaculata to just one shot attempts. On the offensive end, junior forward Alicia Tamboia (Wingdale, N.Y./Dover) and first-year midfielder Laura Megargel (Morristown, N.J./Morristown)scored their first goals of the season and senior forward Kaitlyn Tirney (Springfield/Springfield) tallied her team-leading fourth of the year.
Megargel gave Scranton a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 31st minute of the first half, but the Lady Monarchs scored three times in the final 21 minutes of play to pull out the victory.
Golf
The men's golf team is in third place after the opening two rounds of the Empire 8 Conference championships, which were staged at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, N.Y., on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18-19.
Sophomore Jamie Bresnahan (Exeter/Wyoming Area) carded a three-over-par 74 on the second day to move into third place in the battle for the individual title with a 36-hole total of 153. Scranton, which is just 11 shots behind co-leaders Moravian College and St. John Fisher College heading into the final 36 holes to be played during the spring semester, also received a 158 from sophomore Chris Schank (Dunmore/Scranton Preparatory) and a 160 from sophomore Justin Riley (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield).
Men's Soccer (4-1-1 Overall /0-0 Landmark Conference)
Senior goalkeeper Brandon Dombrowski (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) reached a personal milestone this past week.
On Saturday, Sept. 18, in a 0-0 tie in double overtime against Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., Dombrowski reached the 5000th-minute plateau. In the process, he is now fourth all-time in Scranton history with a goals against average of 1.22 for goalies who have played at least 5,000 minutes.
Earlier in the week, he made seven saves in a 1-0 victory over Ursinus at Fitzpatrick Field. His two shutouts during the period give him 16 for his career, which is tied for fifth on the Royals's all-time list.
Senior forward Michael Drew (Sellersville/Lansdale Catholic) scored the match-winning goal against Ursinus on a play set up by sophomore midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort/Wyoming Valley West).
Women's Soccer (4-3 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
It may be hard to believe, but all seven matches that the Royals have been involved with this season have been decided by one goal.
Scranton opened the period by dropping a 2-1 decision to Kean University on Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Union, N.J. The Royals took an early 1-0 lead on junior co-captain Christina Cognetti's (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) first goal of the season less than two minutes into the match off of a pass from sophomore midfielder Sidney Parker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph). The Cougars scored twice in the second half to pull out the victory.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Gibbons (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) provided the heroics on Saturday, Sept. 18, by scoring her first career goal in the 77th minute as the Royals handed Misericordia University its first loss of the season, 1-0, at Fitzpatrick Field.
Men's Tennis (1-1 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The men's tennis team opened the period with an 8-1 loss to Division II Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, but bounced back nicely on Sunday, Sept. 19, to defeat Lycoming College, 9-0, at the Poly Hi Tennis Courts.
Scranton's lone point against Bloomsburg came in the number three doubles, as sophomores Bennett Kelley (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and Mike Pannone (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall Preparatory) defeated Evan Carney and Jack McClurkin, 8-4.
The Royals received two wins apiece from senior captain Carl Caceres (Teaneck, N.J./Bergen Catholic), sophomores Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit/Scranton Preparatory), Joe Morra (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory), freshman David Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Pannone against Lycoming.
Women's Tennis (1-1 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The women's tennis regrouped from a 9-0 loss at Division II Bloomsburg University on Wednesday, Sept. 15, by defeating Lycoming College, 8-1, on Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Poly Hi Tennis Courts.
Seniors Danielle Wylie (Schnecksville/Parkland) and Caitlin Ehly (Philadelphia/Saint Basil Academy) and first-year players Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) and Devon Cohen (Ambler/Hatboro-Horsham) won two matches apiece against Lycoming.
Volleyball (8-5 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The Royals won three matches during the period to tie their win output for the entire 2009 season.
On Monday, Sept. 13, Scranton overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Delaware Valley, 3-1, in Doylestown. First-year outside hitter Michaela McCrudden (Fort Washington/Mt. St. Joseph Academy) finished with a match-high 15 kills, eight digs and four service aces and first-year right-side hitter Katie Newman (Massapqqua, N.Y./Massapequa) and sophomore outside hitter Jenell McFadden (Springfield/Merion Mercy Academy) contributed 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
The Royals hosted Dickinson College and Misericordia University on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Long Center and emerged victorious in both matches by the score of 3-0.
Against Dickinson, McCrudden finished with 12 kills and five digs, senior middle blockerJulia Kropf (Fleetwood/Fleetwood Area) had 11 kills and two total blocks, and sophomore defensive specialist/libero Marissa Every (East Norriton/Mt. St. Joseph Academy) came up with 11 digs. Sophomore setters Juli Woods (Wallingford/Strath Haven) and Emily Keim (Bethlehem/Liberty) combined for 29 of Scranton's 33 assists.
McCrudden posted her third 'double-double' of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs and Kropf chipped in 11 kills and a solo block in the victory over Misericordia. Every was solid on the backline, finishing with a match-high 20 digs, and Woods had 21 of Scranton's 34 assists. In the process, Woods moved into seventh place on the Royals's all-time list with 810 assists.
