Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled Today

The University of Scranton will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the apartment and fitness complex on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the site of the complex on Mulberry Street (opposite the Patrick & Margaret DeNaples Center). Members of the campus community are invited to attend.

Emergency Notification System Test Wednesday

The University of Scranton will test its emergency notification system in the early afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Each semester, students, faculty and staff are asked to verify and update their contact information used for the University’s Emergency Notification System. Those who have not already done so, should do this prior to the system test date. Verifications and updates to emergency contact information can be made through a link from the My.Scranton portal. Please enter information carefully to ensure you receive the alerts. 

The University uses the product Connect-ED from Blackboard Connect, Inc., to send alerts about emergencies or school closings or delays via e-mail, text and phone. University email addresses (@scranton.edu) are already registered to receive alerts. Members of the University community can register up to three numbers to receive voice and text messages, and up to two additional email accounts.

The emergency notification system is tested each semester.

Community Outreach Office Hosts Annual Volunteer & Service Fair Today

The Community Outreach Office is hosting its Annual Volunteer & Service Fair on Tuesday Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join us in the fourth-floor ballroom of the DeNaples Center to talk to more than 60 non-profit agencies from the Scranton community to find the service placement that is right for you. Some organizations that will be on hand are Boys and Girls Club of NEPA, Pocono Greyhound Rescue, Headstart Preschools, Gino Merli Veterans Center, Moses Taylor Hospital and Lackawanna Pro Bono. Mendelssohn Piano Trio to Perform Sunday

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio will perform at The University of Scranton's Houlihan-McLean Center on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. The concert is presented by the Provost’s Office, Schemel Forum, Performance Music and the Office of Equity & Diversity in celebration of Interdependence Day, 2010. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Role of Women in Transitional Justice & Rwanda’s Reconstruction

Please join us for a lecture presentation by Ms. Justine Mbabazi, an international attorney, as she speaks about Rwandan women's experience in peace building and reconstruction that have united communities under common goals on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the fourth-floor DeNaples Center theater. This will be of particular interest to students and faculty in political science, history, pre-law, sociology, women's studies, international relations, etc. A light lunch will be served. German Conversation Group Hosts Meeting Wednesday

Kaffeeklatsch, a bi-weekly German conversation group, meets Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 4:30-6 p.m. at Northern Light Café, 530 Spruce Street. Speakers of all proficiency levels are welcome. For more information, contact Jamie Trnka at trnkaj2@scranton.edu.

Committee on the Status of Women Seeks Forum Topics

The Committee on the Status of Women has been hosting an Open Forum in the spring and fall for several years. We have had great success/participation with these in the past. Once again, the committee is seeking suggestions for important topics/issues that you would like discussed for our next one on Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Weinberg Memorial Library's Heritage Room. Your input will help us secure a knowledgeable presenter for the forum. Send your suggestions to Dr. Marian Farrell, chair of the committee, by e-mail at farrellm1@scranton.edu or via campus mail. 

Pancho Villa and the Legacy of the Mexican Revolution

The Latin American and Women Studies program will host Dr. Alejandro Quintana, professor at St. John's University, in a dynamic presentation on Francisco "Pancho" Villa and the legacy of the Mexican Revolution on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The story of Pancho Villa's key role in the Mexican Revolution and American history has been material for books, movies and legends. Dr. Quintana will present the fascinating story of Villa's impact on Mexico and the United States in this one-hour lecture.

Dr. Quintana has been an assistant professor of history at St. John's since 2008. He received his Ph.D. in history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2007. His academic interests include the cultural legacies of authoritarianism, nationalism, sovereignty, state formation, and democratic processes in nineteenth and twentieth century Latin America, especially Mexico. He is currently finishing a study on Mexican regional authoritarianism, titled "The President that Never Was: Maximino Avila Camacho and the Taming of Caudillismo in Post-Revolutionary Mexico." This book will be published in 2010 by Lexington Books. In addition, he is working on a biography of Francisco Villa, a major figure of the Mexican Revolution, as part of ABC-CLIO's biography series, scheduled to be published in 2011.

IT Forum Discusses Mobile Devices Sept. 21

Would you like to know more about using and getting support for mobile devices? Come to our IT Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 509, and learn about purchasing, configuring and getting support for some of the latest Droids and the iPad.

Diane M.  Jachimowicz, senior technology services analyst, and Kathy Boock, customer support specialist, will led the presentation. Lunch will be served and there will be prizes! Register Now for AIDS WALK

Register now for The University of Scranton AIDS WALK, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19, at Nay Aug Park, at www.scranton.edu/chew or at the Center for Health Education and Wellness (DeNaples 205K). On Sept. 19, the walk's registration begins at 10 a.m. with the walk starting at 11:30 a.m.  All proceeds benefit the unmet needs of the HIV/AIDS patients at the Scranton Temple Health Center. Registration is $10 and official T-shirts are $5. For more information, call (570) 941-4253.

Family Weekend's Schedule of Events

Registration for Family Weekend, scheduled Sept. 24-26, is free and provides admission to all events except the University Players performances and all meals including the Family Luncheon and Farewell Family Brunch. Some events require advancepre-purchased tickets, as stated below.

All tickets must be paid in advance by Friday, Sept. 10, to avoid being released. We accept VISA, MasterCard or you may mail a check. You will find payment information at the end of the registration process. The refund deadline for tickets is Sept. 10. To assist with our planning, please register prior to Sept. 10. If you have questions relating to Family Weekend, please e-mailfamilyweekend@scranton.edu or call (570) 941-7502.

Here is the schedule of events, which are subject to change without notice, for Family Weekend:

Friday, Sept. 24

5:30 - 8 p.m. – Registration and packet pick-up 
When you arrive on campus, make the DeNaples Center your first stop. A warm welcome awaits you at our hospitality center where you’ll receive your complete schedule of the weekend’s activities, name tag, event tickets and other information.

7 p.m. – From Barcelona, Francesc de Paula Soler, the Poet of the Guitar, will perform his Spanish favorites for all to enjoy.


8 p.m. – Family Trivia Party!
So you think you know your Ladies GaGa and Antebellum? Or how about M*A*S*H and Grey’s Anatomy? Check out this hilarious game and win cool prizes with DJ Mike!

8 p.m. –  Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, adapted by Laura Eason and presented by the University Players –advance tickets required. Career Services Information Session: It’s never too early or too late to start planning for your career. Career Services help students focus on career decisions that are consistent with their unique talents, aspirations and vision for living. Students who are looking for related work experience while they are attending the University can benefit from a variety of services provided by the office. Come find out what career services can do for you! 
Study Abroad Information Session with Michael Simons, director of the Study Abroad Program. The University of Scranton provides opportunities for students to continue their studies at other universities around the world. We encourage you to stop by if you have an interest in adding a global experience to your studies.  
Scranton 101: Everything You Would Like to Know about “The Electric City” with Robert Farrell, Esq., executive director of community relations and public safety. There’s so much more to learn about Scranton than what you find on “The Office." Whether you’ve lived in northeast Pennsylvania your whole life, or plan on being here for only the next four years, you’ll find this session interesting as you learn things about “The Electric City” that you never knew.

 "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons," with Eric Plumer, Ph.D.  We’ve all heard of the best-selling novels "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons." Dr. Plumer will examine the evidence behind some of the amazing claims made in the books, and ask participants to consider how their popularity has shaped the way the Catholic Church is viewed in America today. A book signing of Dr. Plumer’s book "The Catholic Church and American Culture: Why the Claims of Dan Brown Strike a Chord" will follow immediately after lecture and later outside the bookstore.

A favorite at every Family Weekend. Have fun and relax as the kids play on inflatable rides, play games, munch on goodies and more. Tons of fun for the whole family!

4 p.m. –  Family Mass and Commission of New Liturgical Ministers
Join us for Saturday evening Mass with the Jesuits as we celebrate the Eucharist. Families of all faith commitments are warmly invited.

5 - 7:30 p.m. – Dinner on your own 
The Fresh Food Company (third floor of the DeNaples Center) and The Food Court (first floor of the DeNaples Center) will be open, or feel free to dine at one of Scranton’s many wonderful restaurants. A list of local eateries will be provided in your registration packet)

7:30 p.m. – Enjoy and relax with the sounds of David Ostwald’s Gully Low Jazz Band. Inspired by jazz legend Louis Armstrong, this world famous band appears weekly in New York City’s Birdland, and has performed around the globe!
