August 31, 2010: General News

TODAY Rwanda: A Society in Transition

The Office of the Provost, in collaboration with the Education for Justice Program and the Office of Equity and Diversity, is pleased to welcome Father Aloys Mahwa, Jesuit priest and scholar from Rwanda in East Africa, for a very special presentation: Rwanda: A Society in Transition. Father Mahwa's lecture fits well with this year's "Peace and Reconciliation" theme, as well as the freshman class reading about Rwanda's rebirth: "A Thousand Hills" by Stephen Kinzer.

Father Mahwa is the director of the St. Ignace Primary School and executive director of the Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center (IGSC; www.igscrwanda.net), both in Rwanda's capital city of Kigali. His primary interest is research in genocide and post-genocide studies. In his work at the IGSC, Father Mahwa conducts a program that, for the past seven years, has brought groups of university students to Rwanda for several weeks in the summer. The IGSC program incorporates scholarly lectures, tours of the country (with particular attention to genocide memorials), and theater to help students learn about the Rwandan genocide and reconstruction.

This event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Collegiate Hall, in Redington Hall. A light lunch will be served.

German Conversation Group Meets Sept. 1

Kaffeeklatsch, a biweekly German conversation group, meets Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 4:30 - 6 p.m. at Northern Lights Cafe, located at 530 Spruce Street. Speakers of all proficiency levels are welcome.
