UPDATED: Antivirus Software Required

In an effort to better secure computers from current malware attacks, IT Services is requiring that ALL computers connecting to University resources, including the wired, residential network (ResNet) and the wireless network (ROYALAIR), be protected with a modern, regularly updated, antivirus software package.

Personally owned PC and Macintosh computers
with no currently installed antivirus package will not be able to access ResNet or ROYALAIR until an active antivirus package is installed. It is recommended that PC owners with no installed antivirus package download and install Microsoft Security Essentials from www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free product from Microsoft that provides real-time protection for home PCs. It guards against viruses and spyware, as well as other malicious software. The recommendation for Macintosh users is to purchase and install Norton AntiVirus for Mac. Free antivirus products for the Macintosh platform are available but are not rated as highly for protecting your computer as is the Norton product. Norton AntiVirus for Mac can be purchased from JourneyEd.com or any other software retailer.

University owned PC and Macintosh computers in faculty and staff offices and in campus lab facilities are currently protected by McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i (PC) or McAfee’s Virex (Mac). If you are concerned that the computer you are using does not have the current version of McAfee installed, please contact the Technology Support Center at x4357. The Technology Support Center can assist you with confirming the version of McAfee that is installed on the computer you are using and instruct you on obtaining the updated version if necessary.

All computer users are reminded that one of the simplest methods for preventing malware infections and protecting yourself, your computer and University resources is to switch Internet browsers. Microsoft's Internet Explorer is subjected to the largest number of security threats, so switching to a popular, safer alternative such as Mozilla’s Firefox, Opera or Chrome will dramatically improve your PC security right away. Students can easily install these alternative browsers from the Internet. Mozilla’s Firefox is already installed on most staff, faculty and lab computers.

For more tips on securing your computer and your identity, please visit OnGuardOnline.gov’s 7 Practices for Computer Security.

2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog Now Online

The University of Scranton’s 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog is now available online at catalog.scranton.edu. Like previous printed editions, this year’s web-based catalog contains information regarding the University’s academic departments, programs of study, course descriptions and academic calendar. The online publication also includes a wide range of University materials highlighting our Catholic and Jesuit tradition, as well as addressing student-related content, including undergraduate admission and expenses, scholarships and financial aid, and life on campus. The catalog contains a University directory with a complete listing of members of the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and professional staff.

With the completion of the robust online version, the University will no longer print the Undergraduate Catalog. Questions or concerns about the Undergraduate Catalog may be directed to University Editor Tommy Kopetskie at kopetskiet2@scranton.edu.
