Relay for Life Held at The University of Scranton
University of Scranton students, faculty, staff and community members raised more than $21,000 for the American Cancer Society (ACS) at the 5th annual Relay for Life on campus. At the overnight event, which took place April 30 and May 1, more than 30 teams with nearly 300 participants walked around the Dionne Campus Green on Scranton’s campus showing their support for cancer awareness.
During the 12-hour event, several University of Scranton performance groups including Men and Women for Octaves and Urban Beats entertained the participants. A Luminaria Ceremony, honoring cancer survivors and victims, took place at sunset April 30.
Several Scranton residence halls, as well as student run clubs and teams, were involved including the Asian-American Student Association, Community Health Education Club, Urban Beats, the men’s and women’s tennis teams, the women’s soccer team and the swimming team.
Relay for Life has been a prominent event sponsored by the Colleges Against Cancer on Scranton’s campus since 2005. It is the American Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser in support of cancer research, the ASC’s Look Good Feel Better Program and the Hope Lodge. Relay For Life helps participants celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer.
