Photos Wanted for Commencement Video Project

We are looking for photographs to be included in the video that plays prior to the commencement ceremony at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. These photos should be of seniors involved in campus activities. We are looking for group shots, action shots, sports and club shots showing seniors.

Spring Fling Fiesta May 8

Battle of the Bands Scheduled May 8

Battle of the Bands is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The event’s headliner will be Mae and the contestants are bands from the University and Scranton community. Come cheer on your friends and enjoy some music.

Work-Study Positions Available in Public Relations Office

The Public Relations Office has open work-study positions in the Information Reception Center, with flexible scheduling between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Interested students must be eligible for Federal Work Study.

It’s Almost Time for the End of the Year Drive!

End of the Year Drive collection boxes will begin appearing in your residence halls May 8-9. If you can't fit it in your car or it just doesn't fit you, leave it for us!

The Community Outreach and its team of volunteers will begin collecting items donated prior to move-out and through graduation. We take clothing in good condition, shoes, blankets, comforters, bedding, towels, hangers, household items, cleaning supplies (open OK), personal hygiene products (open OK), school supplies (used OK), toys, holiday decorations, working electronics, working lamps, ironing boards, carpets in decent conditions, and non-perishable foods (unopened). Sorry, we can’t accept pillows of any kind (bed, boyfriend, toss, etc), egg crate mattress pads or stuffed animals.

All items are donated to local non-profit organizations in Lackawanna County and distributed to people in need. Your generous donations have helped many organizations in the past, including United Neighborhood Centers, Friends of the Poor, St. Paul's/St. Clare's food pantry, Headstart of Lackawanna County and Our Lady of Snows Church.

The Joys and Challenges of Teaching in Catholic Schools: Are YOU up for the calling?

Open to all Junior, Senior and Graduate Education Majors

The Panuska College of Professional Studies and the Department of Education cordially invite you to an informal workshop on preparing to teach in our Catholic Schools. The presentation, entitled “The Joys and Challenges of Teaching in Catholic Schools: Are YOU up for the calling?”  is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Panuska College Reading Room, 1st floor, McGurrin Hall.

The workshop will be presented by Patricia Aristide, M.A.T., mother of Theresa Aristide, Education major ’10. The workshop will open your eyes and hearts to the challenges and joys of teaching in a Catholic School. Innovative strategies will be discussed to prepare pre-service teachers for their vocation to teach in our Catholic schools.

Summer Work-Study Position

The Office of Alumni Relations is looking for summer work-study students. Hours are flexible between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Endowed Scholars Program Seeks Applicants

Through The Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Endowed Scholars Program, Central Scholarship provides grants for bilingual students pursuing master’s degrees in social work and other mental health fields. Renewable Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded based on financial need and academic merit. Spanish speakers will be given strong preference. 

All applicants must:
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card holder) 
  • Be enrolled or enrolling in a full-time master’s degree program in social work or other mental health fields at an accredited university in the MD/D.C. region 
  • Be fluent in English and another language, preferably Spanish 
  •  Maintain a 3.0 GPA 
  • Agree to work full-time as a bilingual specialist in a mental health field - one year in Maryland for each year funded.    
The goals of the Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Endowed Scholars Program include: 
  • Increase the number of bilingual professionals in Maryland’s mental health system to address the growing need of services required by Spanish speakers and 
  •  Improve recruitment and retention rates for Spanish-speaking, bilingual students who wish to pursue masters degrees in the mental health disciplines.

Apply for Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop

The 2010 AICPA Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop, scheduled May 27-29, 2010, in Chapel Hill, N.C., is an annual invitational program for minority accounting students who plan to pursue the CPA designation. This event aims to strengthen students’ professional skills and understanding of the limitless possibilities and benefits of earning the CPA credential. Through speakers, panel discussions and interactive programs, participants gain confidence and an enhanced understanding of the various career paths with the accounting profession to prepare them for the steps that follow graduation.
An all-expenses paid event, the AICPA covers the cost of student attendees’ transportation, hotel accommodation and meals.

Eligibility Requirements 

To attend, a student must:
  • Be a declared accounting, finance or tax major who intends to pursue the CPA credential 
  • Be a junior, senior, 5th year, or graduate student for the 2010-2011 academic year 
  • Have maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA 
  • Be actively involved in campus and community activities 
  • Have not attended a past workshop 
  • Be an ethnic minority (Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino; Native American; or Asian) 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident

Nursing Scholarship Program Accepting Applications

The Nursing Scholarship Program, a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of registered nurses currently experienced by certain types of health care facilities by helping needy students complete their registered nurse training, is accepting applications until Thursday, May 6, at 5 p.m.

In exchange for the scholarship, upon graduation, the newly minted nurses work at these types of facilities for at least 2 years. 

Benefits
 
In exchange for at least 2 years service at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses, the Nursing Scholarship Program pays
 
Eligible Applicants
  • U.S. citizens or nationals (permanent residents are not eligible)
  • Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time or part-time student in an accredited school of nursing in a professional registered nurse program (baccalaureate, graduate, associate degree, or diploma)
  • Begin classes for the Fall term on or after July 1 and no later than September 30
  • Free from any Federal judgment liens
  • Free from existing service commitments
  • Not delinquent on a Federal debt

Selection Criteria
 
Preference is given to qualified applicants with the greatest financial need who are enrolled full-time in an undergraduate nursing program.
We estimate that 500 applicants will be selected to receive the scholarship in FY 2010 and that all or most will be from the first funding preference group:
  • Have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on the Student Aid Report from the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) and
  • Are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate nursing program as full-time students

Course for Participants in Service/Study Programs

Have you had the experience of spending time among the economically disadvantaged? Do you seek ways of integrating what you experienced into your life, your major and your future career?
 
INTD 284 Integrating Your Immersion Experience, to be offered for the first time in Fall 2010, will provide the opportunity for students to reflect on, process and analyze what they have experienced in a variety of ways, leading to the development of an action plan. It may be taken for one or three credits, and assignments will vary based on the number of credits chosen.

To be eligible, students must have completed either a service trip of at least one full week, or a relevant study abroad course or program between June 2009 and August 2010.
