Lecture on Social Investment by New York University Professor

On Thursday, May 6, Jonathan Morduch of New York University, a respected scholar on microfinance and world poverty, will speak on “Social Investment: New Possibilities for Business and Philanthropy" in the Pearn Auditorium (Brennan Hall 228) from 4 to 5:15 p.m.

The author of two books published by the MIT Press and Princeton, Prof. Morduch has been a consultant to the United Nations and the World Bank. All are welcome to attend. For more information, e-mail Dr. Hong V. Nguyen at nguyen@scranton.edu.

Scranton Inclusion Hosts "GLBT-What?" May 6

On Thursday, May 6, Scranton Inclusion will host an event called “GLBT-What?" with Sara Bendoraitis, a sociology professor and the director of the GLBTA Resource Center at American University, who will present a lecture from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater of the DeNaples Center.

Prof. Bendoraitis will discuss sexuality and campus climate issues for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons. All University members are invited to attend. For more information, contact Scranton.Inclusion@gmail.com.

Performance Music Hosts Symphonic Band and Singers May 8

On Saturday, May 8, Performance Music presents The University of Scranton Symphonic Band and Singers “In Concert” at the Houlihan-McLean Center at 7:30 p.m. The program includes works by Bernstein, Nelhybel, Vaughan Williams and Ticheli and The Kings Singers. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

On-Campus Housing Closing Announcement

Spring 2010 On-Campus Housing closes on Saturday, May 22, at noon. This closing does not apply to residents living in graduate housing (Herold House and Dorothy Day Apts.) or for those students with permission to reside on campus for Senior Week. Students are required to check out within 24 hours of their last final. For more information, contact the Office of Residence Life at 941-6226 or res-life@scranton.edu.

Senior Week On-Campus Housing Announcement

Graduating seniors who signed up for Senior Week are automatically on the list to remain in housing for Senior Week (May 22 - May 31).

Individual requests (taking a class during senior week, a graduating senior not participating in senior week, or on-campus employment) must be made by the resident with a submitted form in our Condron Hall office by Friday, May 14.

Requests for student groups needing housing (Royal Ambassadors/Admissions, End of the Year Donation Drive Volunteers, etc.) must be made by the faculty or staff member, who can e-mail us at res-life@scranton.edu. Students with permission to remain on campus for Senior Week must check out by Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m. and will receive an e-mail with more detailed instructions.

‘Opera Italiana’ Scheduled May 11 at Scranton

Wyoming Seminary and The Performing Arts Institute are scheduled to present “Opera Italiana, A Nation Finds its Voice” featuring the Wyoming Seminary PAI/Civic Symphony Orchestra and the combined choruses of Wyoming Seminar and The University of Scranton Tuesday, May 11, at the Houlihan-McLean Center.

The event, which will include arias, duets, choruses and overtures from the operas of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, begins at 7:30 p.m.

Soloists Magdalyn E. Boga, Elizabeth Duhr, Jason Eck, Mark Kratz and Heather Petruzelli will perform and Jerome Campbell will direct the Wyoming Seminary PAI/Civic Symphony Orchestra.

Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

“Opera Italiana” will also be performed off campus Monday, May 10, at Wyoming Seminary’s Great Hall at 8 p.m. The Great Hall is located at 228 Wyoming Ave. in  Kingston (just north of Kingston Corners).

2010 Diversity Festival Celebration Set May 7

The second annual Diversity Festival is scheduled for Friday, May 7, on the Dionne Campus Green from 3 to 5 p.m.

This event, coordinated by the Offices of Multicultural Affairs and Residence Life and the United Colors Student Organization, is a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about the members of the University community.

More than 20 students, staff and faculty will host tables displaying the countries of their origins and other multicultural related themes. Participants will receive a passport to visit each table and be eligible for free T-shirts, food and prizes. The theme this year is "All Together Different."

Zumba Class with SIFE May 6

“Thinking Pink” by SIFE, in partnership with NEPA Susan G. Komen For The Cure, will host a ZUMBA class Thursday, May 6, on the Dionne Campus Green from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The cost is $2 – cash only.

All proceeds go to Susan G. Komen to help raise awareness about Breast Cancer and the importance of self-breast exams. Please wear pink to support this Breast Cancer Awareness event.

Participants are entered in a raffle to win gift cards to numerous businesses in downtown Scranton.

NOW Hair Studio Visits Scranton May 4

The NOW Hair Studio is coming to The University of Scranton’s Long Center Tuesday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The studio will be offering haircuts for $10 and proceeds benefit the University Ministries International Service Program (ISP).

Habitat for Humanity: Learn How to Build a Nonprofit from Scratch

Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Coordinator and University of Scranton student Matthew Tirella ’10 will present the story of Habitat for Humanity of Lackawanna County – once listed as the “worst affiliate in the nation” – Tuesday, May 4, from 9 to 9:35 pm in Brennan Auditorium (Room 228).

Come learn the story of the affiliate’s turnaround, how two college students changed the way a city looks at low-income housing, and how you can make a difference in your own community.

‘The Real Dirt on Farmer John’ Presented May 7

Buy Fresh Buy Local Northeast Region invites you to a local screening of The Real Dirt on Farmer John, a movie about the epic tale of a maverick Midwestern farmer, on Friday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at The University of Scranton.

Annual President's Breakfast Scheduled May 18

Join The Center for Health Education and Wellness and Dining Services for the 11th annual President’s Breakfast Tuesday, May 18, from 9 to 11 p.m. on the third and fourth floors of the DeNaples Center. The annual event will include free breakfast, meditation, massages and arts and crafts.

Relax during finals week as your faculty and staff serve you breakfast. Prizes will be awarded to the first 1,000 students.

IT Matters Spring 2010 Edition

The newest edition of IT Matters, a newsletter focused on the developments and activities of the Information Resources Division is now available. With rapid changes, we realize that there is a need to create an ongoing method of keeping our community up to date. IT Matters will provide our faculty, staff and students with information on current applications, planned changes to technologies and new initiatives.
