Fulbright Information Sessions Scheduled
There will be two information sessions for students interested in learning more about Fulbright Scholarships on Tuesday, April 27, in Pearn Auditorium (Brennan Hall 228). Dr. Susan Trussler, the University's Fulbright Program Advisor, will present the one-hour sessions, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
All students, freshmen through graduates, are invited to learn about the government's most prestigious scholarship program, which funds a year of study or teaching in another country for U.S. citizens. Those who will hold a bachelor's degree by June 2011 and want to spend the 2011-12 year overseas must attend one of these sessions and start the application process this summer.

The Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Endowed Scholars Program Seeks Applicants
Through The Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Endowed Scholars Program, Central Scholarship provides grants for bilingual students pursuing master’s degrees in social work and other mental health fields. Renewable Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded based on financial need and academic merit. Spanish speakers will be given strong preference.
All applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card holder)
- Be enrolled or enrolling in a full-time master’s degree program in social work or other mental health fields at an accredited university in the MD/D.C. region
- Be fluent in English and another language, preferably Spanish
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA
- Agree to work full-time as a bilingual specialist in a mental health field - one year in Maryland for each year funded.
The goals of the Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Endowed Scholars Program include:
- Increase the number of bilingual professionals in Maryland’s mental health system to address the growing need of services required by Spanish speakers and
- Improve recruitment and retention rates for Spanish-speaking, bilingual students who wish to pursue masters degrees in the mental health disciplines.

Apply for Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop
The 2010 AICPA Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop, scheduled May 27-29, 2010, in Chapel Hill, N.C., is an annual invitational program for minority accounting students who plan to pursue the CPA designation. This event aims to strengthen students’ professional skills and understanding of the limitless possibilities and benefits of earning the CPA credential. Through speakers, panel discussions and interactive programs, participants gain confidence and an enhanced understanding of the various career paths with the accounting profession to prepare them for the steps that follow graduation.
An all-expenses paid event, the AICPA covers the cost of student attendees’ transportation, hotel accommodation and meals.
Eligibility Requirements
To attend, a student must:
- Be a declared accounting, finance or tax major who intends to pursue the CPA credential
- Be a junior, senior, 5th year, or graduate student for the 2010-2011 academic year
- Have maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Be actively involved in campus and community activities
- Have not attended a past workshop
- Be an ethnic minority (Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino; Native American; or Asian)
- Be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
Nursing Scholarship Program Accepting Applications
The Nursing Scholarship Program, a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of registered nurses currently experienced by certain types of health care facilities by helping needy students complete their registered nurse training, is accepting applications until Thursday, May 6, at 5 p.m.

In exchange for the scholarship, upon graduation, the newly minted nurses work at these types of facilities for at least 2 years.

- U.S. citizens or nationals (permanent residents are not eligible)
- Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time or part-time student in an accredited school of nursing in a professional registered nurse program (baccalaureate, graduate, associate degree, or diploma)
- Begin classes for the Fall term on or after July 1 and no later than September 30
- Free from any Federal judgment liens
- Free from existing service commitments
- Not delinquent on a Federal debt

Selection Criteria
Preference is given to qualified applicants with the greatest financial need who are enrolled full-time in an undergraduate nursing program.
We estimate that 500 applicants will be selected to receive the scholarship in FY 2010 and that all or most will be from the first funding preference group:
- Have a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on the Student Aid Report from the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) and
- Are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate nursing program as full-time students
Communication Connect: A Unique Networking Opportunity for Communication Majors

Communication Connect: a unique networking opportunity for students will be held Friday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Brennan Hall, fifth floor in the Rose Room. This event is a great way to connect to fellow alumni and could help point you in the right direction for your future.

The University of Scranton Programming Board (USPB) has announced the alternative rock band Brand New will perform at The John J. Long, S.J., Center on Saturday, April 24, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the general public, 18 or older, are priced at $15 and are available for sale from April 5 to April 23 at scranton.musictoday.com.
Only those 18 and older will be allowed to attend concert.
Brand New’s singles include “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” and “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad.” The band originated in Long Island, N.Y., and has toured internationally.

Positions Open for Summer Conference Assistants
The Conference & Event Services Office has positions open for Summer Conference Assistants. These are work-study positions available from May through August. Assistants work with a variety of conference and summer camp groups while they are on campus. Duties include but are not limited to room set-ups, meeting and greeting conference guests, and a variety of logistics related to conferences.
Students with a background in AV and Technology are encouraged to apply. Hours are days, evenings and weekends, and you must be eligible for work study.

Financial Aid 2010-2011 Filing Reminder
Students applying for need based financial aid, including loans, for the 2010-2011 academic year must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Department of Education by April 15. You can apply online with a pin number at
www.fafsa.gov. If you wish to borrow under the federal student loan programs, please indicate that choice in the ‘Additional Information For Your School’ section of the FAFSA.
Guidelines for the Financial Aid Process were mailed to home mailing addresses the beginning of February. Please review this publication for updated information on reporting changes in family income due to economic conditions, loan and payment plan information and granting third party access to your financial aid and student account information. Pennsylvania State Grant recipients have a filing deadline of May 1, 2010. However, students must still file the FAFSA by April 15, 2010, to apply for institutional aid.

Third Annual Integration Bee Set for April 27
The Math Department will host its third annual Integration Bee Tuesday, April 27, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in The DeNaples Center ballroom. This calculus-based competition is like a spelling bee, but instead of spelling words, contestants compute integrals of given functions. The top five contestants in the first round will receive $25 each and the overall winner will receive an additional $50. Registration is free and early registrants receive a free T-shirt. Registration has been extended to Wednesday, April 14. From 3:30 to 4 p.m. is sign in time and a book exhibit. Foreign Language National Honor Society Enrolling New Members
The Theta Iota Chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma, is in the process of enrolling new members.
Requirements are the following:
a) for full membership, two consecutive A or A-'s in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above
b) for associate membership, two consecutive B+'s or better in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above, or a noteworthy academic record in more than one language.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. All applications are individually screened. Only completed semester grades are considered. Application forms are available from Joyce Knott, Department Secretary, 301 O'Hara Hall, as well as, from departmental faculty.
The induction ceremony and luncheon will take place in the DeNaples Center 405 on Tuesday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Inductees will receive their certificates of membership and society pins; graduating seniors will receive their gold honors cords.
Deadline for applications and payment of fee: Tuesday, April 20. The membership fee of $50 (cash or check) includes the luncheon. Applications without fees will not be considered. Please make checks to the University of Scranton and leave completed applications with Joyce Knott, O'Hara 301. Fees will be returned to those students not accepted for membership.

Course for Participants in Service/Study Programs
Have you had the experience of spending time among the economically disadvantaged? Do you seek ways of integrating what you experienced into your life, your major and your future career?
INTD 284 Integrating Your Immersion Experience, to be offered for the first time in Fall 2010, will provide the opportunity for students to reflect on, process and analyze what they have experienced in a variety of ways, leading to the development of an action plan. It may be taken for one or three credits, and assignments will vary based on the number of credits chosen.
To be eligible, students must have completed either a service trip of at least one full week, or a relevant study abroad course or program between June 2009 and August 2010. Registration for Summer and Fall 2010 courses will begin for undergraduate students the beginning of April. Specific dates, as well as what students need to do in preparation for registration advising and to register by web, can be found in the e-mail sent to students and also on the Registrar’s Web page,

What do undergraduate students need to do now?
First, pick up your registration materials at the following locations, on or after February 17:
- KSOM students at the KSOM Advising Center (Brennan Hall 206)
- PCPS students at the PCPS Advising Center (McGurrin Hall 101)
- CGCE students at the CGCE Office (O'Hara Hall 201)
- CAS sophomores, juniors and seniors at the Registrar's Office (St. Thomas Hall 301).
- CAS freshmen: The CAS Advising Center has set up an advising appointment for you.
Pick up your appointment letter, along with your CAPP and registration forms, in the CAS Advising Center (St. Thomas 309).
Ssecond, make and keep an advising appointment at your advising center or with your faculty advisor. [Special note to CAS freshmen: Since an advising appointment has already been made for you, you just need to pick up your appointment letter in the CAS Advising Center.]
Third, complete your registration worksheets and forms and then meet with your advisor to review your course selections. Your advisor will then provide you with your registration start date and term PIN needed to access web registration. [Note: You will also need your correct UIS PIN. If you do not know your UIS PIN, you may access the online self-service PIN reset program, or contact the Technology Support Center at
941-4357 prior to your initial date of registration.]
Fourth, be sure to clear any holds you may have on your account from the Bursar, Student Affairs, Library, Network Resources or Public Safety before your registration start date so that you can access the web registration system. Students who have holds on their account will not be able to register until they satisfy their obligations.
