Off-Campus Transition Information Sessions Set April 13

Students who are thinking about or who will be moving off campus are encouraged to attend one of two “Off-Campus Transition Information Sessions”
Tuesday, April 13, at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., in Brennan 228, Pearn Auditorium.

Hear advise from students currently living off campus and learn about leases, your rights and responsibilities. For more information, contact the Dean of Students Office, 201 DeNaples Center, at ext. 7680.

Brand New Concert Tickets Now Available

The University of Scranton Programming Board (USPB) has announced the alternative rock band Brand New will perform at The John J. Long, S.J., Center on Saturday, April 24, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the general public, 18 or older, are priced at $15 and are available for sale from April 5 to April 23 at scranton.musictoday.com.

Only those 18 and older will be allowed to attend concert.

Brand New’s singles include “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” and “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad.” The band originated in Long Island, N.Y., and has toured internationally.

3) Your swipe will not work for your donated meal; commit to using flex instead

Positions Open for Summer Conference Assistants

The Conference & Event Services Office has positions open for Summer Conference Assistants. These are work-study positions available from May through August. Assistants work with a variety of conference and summer camp groups while they are on campus. Duties include but are not limited to room set-ups, meeting and greeting conference guests, and a variety of logistics related to conferences.

Students with a background in AV and Technology are encouraged to apply. Hours are days, evenings and weekends, and you must be eligible for work study.

There will be an information session Thursday, April 15, at 11:30 a.m. in Brennan Hall, PNC Board Room. If you are interested and can’t attend, e-mail Fran Mancuso at mancusof3@scranton.edu.

Christopher Jason Perfilio Memorial Scholarship Deadline Approaching

The deadline for the Christopher Jason Perfilio Memorial Scholarship for 2010/2011 – open to all SJLA students, philosophy and theology majors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher – is quickly approaching. Seeking Volunteers for ARC Dance April 15

The Council for Exceptional Children and the Occupational Therapy Club are sponsoring the spring dance for the ARC of Northeast Pennsylvania Thursday, April 15, in the Long Center from 6 to 9 p.m. Set up for the dance will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Interested in Studying Aboard in South Africa or Spain?

Mindy Schroeder from Marquette University will present an informational session on studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa and Spain Tuesday, April 13, in the DeNaples Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Study Abroad Office’s globetrotting work-study students are also here to help students interested in studying aboard. They have studied in countries all over the world and are the true “experts.” All interested students are encouraged to stop by the Study Abroad Office.

Financial Aid 2010-2011 Filing Reminder

Students applying for need based financial aid, including loans, for the 2010-2011 academic year must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Department of Education by April 15.  You can apply online with a pin number at www.fafsa.gov. If you wish to borrow under the federal student loan programs, please indicate that choice in the ‘Additional Information For Your School’ section of the FAFSA.

Guidelines for the Financial Aid Process
were mailed to home mailing addresses the beginning of February. Please review this publication for updated information on reporting changes in family income due to economic conditions, loan and payment plan information and granting third party access to your financial aid and student account information. Pennsylvania State Grant recipients have a filing deadline of May 1, 2010. However, students must still file the FAFSA by April 15, 2010, to apply for institutional aid. 

Second Annual Student Leadership Awards Information

Attention Club Leaders and Members:
 
The Second Annual Student Leadership Awards Information is now available. Award information as well as nomination forms are available on the student government Web site, www.scrantonsg.org or on the Student Activities Web site, http://matrix.scranton.edu/studentlife/studentaffairs/student-activities/index.shtml.

All nominations are due to the Office of Student Activities and Orientation (DeNaples 205) by noon on April 16. Important End of Year Information for Clubs

Attention club leaders! As the end of the year is quickly approaching, there is some important information to keep in mind:
  • Meetings concerning club funding for next year will be held on April 14 at noon and 6 p.m. in Brennan 228. It is strongly suggested that old and new club leaders attend this meeting in preparation for filling out funding information.
  • FUNDING ALLOCATION forms are due April 23 to the Office of Clubs and Organizations, in the student forum 205S. This paperwork must be filled out in order for your club to be considered for funding next year.
  • Community Service forms are due April 30 to the Office of Clubs and Organizations, in the student forum 205S. It is required that all clubs complete a minimum of three approved community service events by April 30 in order to receive funding for next year. For more information about community service ideas stop by The Community Outreach Office.
  • The Street Sweep is set for April 17.  If interested in participating, sign up your club on the student government Web site, www.scrantonsg.org.  Street Sweep counts as a community service event!
  • Second Annual Student Leadership Awards Information. Please visit the student government Web site, www.scrantonsg.org, to find information about nominating your club, club members or advisor for club leadership awards. All nominations are due to the Office of Student Activities and Orientation (DeNaples 205) by noon on April 16. For more information, contact Shannon Murphy at murphys2@scranton.edu or x6233.

Applications Now Available for Class Night Awards

Attention Class of 2010:
 
Applications are now available for the Division of Student Affairs - Class Night Awards.
 
Since 1992, the Division of Student Affairs has presented two awards at Class Night, the Lawrence A. Mann Award and the Student Life Award. The awards are presented to selected graduating seniors. Applications and nominations are open to any undergraduate member of the senior class. Self-nominations are acceptable. A committee comprised of staff members within the division of Student Affairs selects the recipients of the awards. Applications are now available in the Student Affairs Office, DeNaples 201. Final applications are due Friday, April 16. For more information, contact Student Affairs at 941-7680.
 
Lawrence A. Mann Award
Professor Lawrence A. Mann was a beloved faculty member of The University of Scranton community for more than 20 years. A professor of Latin, Dr. Mann was also a lay Resident Counselor for Denis Edward and Hannan Halls. His personal warmth, devotion to the institution and sensitivity to students along with a willingness to help plan and participate in student activities throughout the school year ensured his popularity on campus. He was a refined, kind, devout and outgoing person who served as a wonderful role model for students. The award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated extraordinary involvement in student activities and through her/his contributions is a role model to fellow students.
 
Student Life Award
The Student Life Award is presented annually to the student who has worked diligently to improve the quality of life at The University of Scranton during his/her career.

Third Annual Integration Bee Set for April 27

The Math Department will host its third annual Integration Bee Tuesday, April 27, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in The DeNaples Center ballroom. This calculus-based competition is like a spelling bee, but instead of spelling words, contestants compute integrals of given functions. The top five contestants in the first round will receive $25 each and the overall winner will receive an additional $50.  Registration is free and early registrants receive a free T-shirt. Registration has been extended to Wednesday, April 14. From 3:30 to 4 p.m. is sign in time and a book exhibit. If you have a class and can get to the competition by 4 p.m., we would be happy to have you still participate. Scranton Street Sweep Set for April 17

Two years ago a tradition was started by the University’s Student Government entitled the Scranton Street Sweep. It was a way for students from our University to take ownership of the Hill Section and have a positive impact on our campus and our community.

This semester’s Scranton Street Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m., beginning in the Claver Hall parking lot. More specific details will be available in the near future. 

Club leaders: this could be a wonderful idea to use as a community service event. Please encourage your club to participate. Additionally, for the first time, the Scranton Alumni Chapter will be joining us in the Street Sweep for their Alumni Day of Service.

Foreign Language National Honor Society Enrolling New Members

The Theta Iota Chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma, is in the process of enrolling new members. 
 
Requirements are the following:  
a) for full membership, two consecutive A or A-'s in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above
 
b) for associate membership, two consecutive B+'s or better in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above, or a noteworthy academic record in more than one language.  
 
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. All applicat ions are individually screened. Only completed semester grades are considered.   Application forms are available from Joyce Knott, Department Secretary, 301 O'Hara Hall, as well as, from departmental faculty.
 
The induction ceremony and luncheon will take place in the DeNaples Center 405 on Tuesday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Inductees will receive their certificates of membership and society pins; graduating seniors will receive their gold honors cords. 
 
Deadline for applications and payment of fee: Tuesday, April 20. The membership fee of $50 (cash or check) includes the luncheon. Applications without fees will not be considered. Please make checks to the University of Scranton and leave completed applications with Joyce Knott, O'Hara 301. Fees will be returned to those students not accepted for membership.

Written/Media Competition on Justice Theme

Do you have something to say about bioengineered food, food waste, hunger and scarcity, or any other topic related to this year’s justice theme of food? Consider submitting an essay, poem, video, painting, photo, etc.

Course for Participants in Service/Study Programs

Have you had the experience of spending time among the economically disadvantaged? Do you seek ways of integrating what you experienced into your life, your major and your future career?
 
INTD 284 Integrating Your Immersion Experience, to be offered for the first time in Fall 2010, will provide the opportunity for students to reflect on, process and analyze what they have experienced in a variety of ways, leading to the development of an action plan. It may be taken for one or three credits, and assignments will vary based on the number of credits chosen.

To be eligible, students must have completed either a service trip of at least one full week, or a relevant study abroad course or program between June 2009 and August 2010. Summer/Fall 2010 Registration Information for Undergraduate Students and Advisors

Registration for Summer and Fall 2010 courses will begin for undergraduate students the beginning of April. Specific dates, as well as what students need to do in preparation for registration advising and to register by web, can be found in the e-mail sent to students and also on the Registrar’s Web page, www.scranton.edu/registrar.
 
What do undergraduate students need to do now?

First, pick up your registration materials at the following locations, on or after February 17:  
  • KSOM students at the KSOM Advising Center (Brennan Hall 206)
  • PCPS students at the PCPS Advising Center (McGurrin Hall 101)

  • CGCE students at the CGCE Office (O'Hara Hall 201)
  • CAS sophomores, juniors and seniors at the Registrar's Office (St. Thomas Hall 301).
  • CAS freshmen: The CAS Advising Center has set up an advising appointment for you.
 Pick up your appointment letter, along with your CAPP and registration forms, in the CAS Advising Center (St. Thomas 309).


Ssecond, make and keep an advising appointment at your advising center or with your faculty advisor. [Special note to CAS freshmen: Since an advising appointment has already been made for you, you just need to pick up your appointment letter in the CAS Advising Center.]



Third, complete your registration worksheets and forms and then meet with your advisor to review your course selections. Your advisor will then provide you with your registration start date and term PIN needed to access web registration. [Note: You will also need your correct UIS PIN. If you do not know your UIS PIN, you may access the online self-service PIN reset program, or contact the Technology Support Center at
941-4357 prior to your initial date of registration.]
 

Fourth, be sure to clear any holds you may have on your account from the Bursar, Student Affairs, Library, Network Resources or Public Safety before your registration start date so that you can access the web registration system. Students who have holds on their account will not be able to register until they satisfy their obligations.
