Journalism Boot Camp Scheduled April 10

The third annual Journalism Boot Camp, a joint venture of The Scranton Times-Tribune, The University of Scranton and Marywood University, is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., in St. Thomas Hall. 

Professional journalists from The Times-Tribune will conduct the daylong workshop for area college students, concentrating a variety of subjects, including desktop publishing, editorial writing, feature writing and sports writing. An art track, highlighting graphics and political cartooning, has been added this year. 

According to Matthew Reavy, Ph.D., professor of communications, the Boot Camp is open to all University students regardless of major, though participating students are asked to register beforehand. Registration forms are available at professor Kim Pavlick’s office in St. Thomas Hall, fourth floor. 

The workshop will be held on the fourth floor of St. Thomas Hall in rooms 462, 463, 465 and the television studio. For more information, contact professor Pavlick at pavlickk2@scranton.edu.

Financial Aid 2010-2011 Filing Reminder

Students applying for need based financial aid, including loans, for the 2010-2011 academic year must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Department of Education by April 15.  You can apply online with a pin number at www.fafsa.gov. If you wish to borrow under the federal student loan programs, please indicate that choice in the ‘Additional Information For Your School’ section of the FAFSA.

Guidelines for the Financial Aid Process
were mailed to home mailing addresses the beginning of February. Please review this publication for updated information on reporting changes in family income due to economic conditions, loan and payment plan information and granting third party access to your financial aid and student account information. Pennsylvania State Grant recipients have a filing deadline of May 1, 2010. However, students must still file the FAFSA by April 15, 2010, to apply for institutional aid. 

Second Annual Student Leadership Awards Information

Attention Club Leaders and Members:
 
The Second Annual Student Leadership Awards Information is now available. Award information as well as nomination forms are available on the student government Web site, www.scrantonsg.org or on the Student Activities Web site, http://matrix.scranton.edu/studentlife/studentaffairs/student-activities/index.shtml.

All nominations are due to the Office of Student Activities and Orientation (DeNaples 205) by noon on April 16. IEEE Meeting Set for April 8

This week's topic of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) weekly meeting will be "Aspects of Project Management- Accountability and Oversight" presented by Larry Puleo of MLP Consultants, LLC. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 8, at noon in STT 292. There will be free lunch starting at 11:45 a.m. and everybody is welcome.
 
The IEEE is a program that provides students with the opportunity not only to participate in a campus wide event in the form of an IEEE seminar series (presentations by distinguished scientists, community business leaders, as well as our alumni and various employers/prospective job companies), but also as a time and place to pursue the club agenda, professional development and networking.

The Leadership Series Presents 'How to Effectively Run a Club!'

The Leadership Series presents "How to Effectively Run a Club!" on Monday, April 12, at 8 p.m. in DeNaples Center 405. The DeNaples Leadership Staff will host the presentation for club leaders, and topics will include making use of all leadership positions, writing informative newsletters and having fun while still being efficient. For more information, contact Nicole Zullo at zullon2@scranton.edu.

Important End of Year Information for Clubs

Attention club leaders! As the end of the year is quickly approaching, there is some important information to keep in mind:
  • Meetings concerning club funding for next year will be held on April 14 at noon and 6 p.m. in Brennan 228. It is strongly suggested that old and new club leaders attend this meeting in preparation for filling out funding information.
  • FUNDING ALLOCATION forms are due April 23 to the Office of Clubs and Organizations, in the student forum 205S. This paperwork must be filled out in order for your club to be considered for funding next year.
  • Community Service forms are due April 30 to the Office of Clubs and Organizations, in the student forum 205S. It is required that all clubs complete a minimum of three approved community service events by April 30 in order to receive funding for next year. For more information about community service ideas stop by The Community Outreach Office.
  • The Street Sweep is set for April 17.  If interested in participating, sign up your club on the student government Web site, www.scrantonsg.org.  Street Sweep counts as a community service event!
  • Second Annual Student Leadership Awards Information. Please visit the student government Web site, www.scrantonsg.org, to find information about nominating your club, club members or advisor for club leadership awards. Applications Now Available for Class Night Awards

Attention Class of 2010:
 
Applications are now available for the Division of Student Affairs - Class Night Awards.
 
Since 1992, the Division of Student Affairs has presented two awards at Class Night, the Lawrence A. Mann Award and the Student Life Award. The awards are presented to selected graduating seniors. Applications and nominations are open to any undergraduate member of the senior class. Self-nominations are acceptable. A committee comprised of staff members within the division of Student Affairs selects the recipients of the awards. Applications are now available in the Student Affairs Office, DeNaples 201. Lawrence A. Mann Award
Professor Lawrence A. Mann was a beloved faculty member of The University of Scranton community for more than 20 years. A professor of Latin, Dr. Mann was also a lay Resident Counselor for Denis Edward and Hannan Halls. His personal warmth, devotion to the institution and sensitivity to students along with a willingness to help plan and participate in student activities throughout the school year ensured his popularity on campus. He was a refined, kind, devout and outgoing person who served as a wonderful role model for students. The award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated extraordinary involvement in student activities and through her/his contributions is a role model to fellow students.
 
Student Life Award
The Student Life Award is presented annually to the student who has worked diligently to improve the quality of life at The University of Scranton during his/her career.

Third Annual Integration Bee Set for April 27

The Math Department will host its third annual Integration Bee Tuesday, April 27, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in The DeNaples Center ballroom. This calculus-based competition is like a spelling bee, but instead of spelling words, contestants compute integrals of given functions. The top five contestants in the first round will receive $25 each and the overall winner will receive an additional $50.  Registration is free and early registrants receive a free T-shirt. Job Opportunities for Technically Savvy Students

The CTLE is seeking work-study students to be technical consultants (TechCons), assisting faculty and students with the use of technology for teaching and learning purposes. 

TechCons must possess excellent technical skills, be web savvy and enjoy working one-on-one as well as in a team environment. There are a wide range of projects that TechCons work on, including assisting with the use of ANGEL, developing sophisticated Web pages, creating E-Portfolios, enhancing PowerPoint presentations with audio/video, scanning, digitizing, and audio/video streaming services. TechCons are part of a small team of students working in a cooperative environment.

Ireland Scholarship Deadline Quickly Approaching

Are you from Northeastern Pennsylvania? Are you planning to study abroad in Ireland during the 2010 Fall or Spring semesters?
 Apply for the Dr. John H. Corcoran Scholarship for Study in Ireland, sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Lackawanna County.  
 

But hurry, time is running out to grab this great opportunity. The deadline is Friday, April 9.

In 1984, the Friendly Sons established a perpetual scholarship fund to finance academic study in Ireland by a college student. Since its inception, the scholarship has been given in alternate years to a student from The University of Scranton and Marywood University.

 Sc holarship recipients must spend at least one semester at a college-level institution in Ireland and, upon return, discuss their experiences in Ireland with the executive committee of the Friendly Sons. The scholarship winner is chosen based on a GPA of 3.0 or above, services, activities, interests and work experience, and a personal statement and essay.

 

Since 1984, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick has donated $42,000 to The University of Scranton through the scholarship program. Applications are available in the International Programs & Services Office located at 5110 Communications Wing in St. Thomas Hall.

Scranton Street Sweep Set for April 17

Two years ago a tradition was started by the University’s Student Government entitled the Scranton Street Sweep. It was a way for students from our University to take ownership of the Hill Section and have a positive impact on our campus and our community.

This semester’s Scranton Street Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m., beginning in the Claver Hall parking lot. More specific details will be available in the near future. 

Club leaders: this could be a wonderful idea to use as a community service event. Please encourage your club to participate. Additionally, for the first time, the Scranton Alumni Chapter will be joining us in the Street Sweep for their Alumni Day of Service.

Late Night at Scranton Event Slated April 8

A Late Night at Scranton event involving Sports Challenges will be hosted Thursday, April 8, from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
 
The Recreational Sports Department is hosting this event in the Long Center Gym. Come and try out Phantom Entertainment's inflatable wrecking ball with three of your friends or bungee race against someone else! Try your hand at free throws, a basketball spot-shooting contest or see how fast you can throw a baseball! Pizza, soda, and door prizes are available. Foreign Language National Honor Society Enrolling New Members

The Theta Iota Chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma, is in the process of enrolling new members. 
 
Requirements are the following:  
a) for full membership, two consecutive A or A-'s in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above
 
b) for associate membership, two consecutive B+'s or better in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above, or a noteworthy academic record in more than one language.  
 
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. All applicat ions are individually screened. Only completed semester grades are considered.   Application forms are available from Joyce Knott, Department Secretary, 301 O'Hara Hall, as well as, from departmental faculty.
 
The induction ceremony and luncheon will take place in the DeNaples Center 405 on Tuesday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Inductees will receive their certificates of membership and society pins; graduating seniors will receive their gold honors cords. 
 
Deadline for applications and payment of fee: Tuesday, April 20. The membership fee of $50 (cash or check) includes the luncheon. Applications without fees will not be considered. Please make checks to the University of Scranton and leave completed applications with Joyce Knott, O'Hara 301. Fees will be returned to those students not accepted for membership.

Informational Session on AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to PA

There will be an information session for the AmeriCorps program, Scholars in Service to PA, on Thursday, April 8 at noon in the DeNaples Theater. Students can volunteer during the 2010-11 academic year and earn an educational award of $1,132 for 300 hours of service or $1,415 for 450 hours of service. On-campus LSAT Workshop

A workshop for students preparing to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) will begin Friday, April 16, with eight sessions being held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings finishing on Saturday, May 8. During the course of the workshop, three practice tests will be administered under simulated test conditions. The $225 registration fee includes all workshop materials.  Registration forms are available in the History Department office, 251 St. Thomas Hall. Course for Participants in Service/Study Programs

Have you had the experience of spending time among the economically disadvantaged? Do you seek ways of integrating what you experienced into your life, your major and your future career?
 
INTD 284 Integrating Your Immersion Experience, to be offered for the first time in Fall 2010, will provide the opportunity for students to reflect on, process and analyze what they have experienced in a variety of ways, leading to the development of an action plan. It may be taken for one or three credits, and assignments will vary based on the number of credits chosen.

To be eligible, students must have completed either a service trip of at least one full week, or a relevant study abroad course or program between June 2009 and August 2010. Summer/Fall 2010 Registration Information for Undergraduate Students and Advisors

Registration for Summer and Fall 2010 courses will begin for undergraduate students the beginning of April. Specific dates, as well as what students need to do in preparation for registration advising and to register by web, can be found in the e-mail sent to students and also on the Registrar’s Web page, www.scranton.edu/registrar.
 
What do undergraduate students need to do now?

First, pick up your registration materials at the following locations, on or after February 17:  
  • KSOM students at the KSOM Advising Center (Brennan Hall 206)
  • PCPS students at the PCPS Advising Center (McGurrin Hall 101)

  • CGCE students at the CGCE Office (O'Hara Hall 201)
  • CAS sophomores, juniors and seniors at the Registrar's Office (St. Thomas Hall 301).
  • CAS freshmen: The CAS Advising Center has set up an advising appointment for you.
 Pick up your appointment letter, along with your CAPP and registration forms, in the CAS Advising Center (St. Thomas 309).


Ssecond, make and keep an advising appointment at your advising center or with your faculty advisor. [Special note to CAS freshmen: Since an advising appointment has already been made for you, you just need to pick up your appointment letter in the CAS Advising Center.]



Third, complete your registration worksheets and forms and then meet with your advisor to review your course selections. Your advisor will then provide you with your registration start date and term PIN needed to access web registration. [Note: You will also need your correct UIS PIN. If you do not know your UIS PIN, you may access the online self-service PIN reset program, or contact the Technology Support Center at
941-4357 prior to your initial date of registration.]
 

Fourth, be sure to clear any holds you may have on your account from the Bursar, Student Affairs, Library, Network Resources or Public Safety before your registration start date so that you can access the web registration system. Students who have holds on their account will not be able to register until they satisfy their obligations.

The National Survey of Student Engagement Open

The Institutional Research Office is administering the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) this spring. The web-based survey is administered to a random sample of freshmen and seniors. The goal of the survey is to help the University maintain and improve institutional effectiveness. The results will be available in late summer 2010 and a results analysis will be available in fall of the same year.
