Late Night Activities Attracting Students
Late Night at Scranton is an initiative started this year to offer alternative, alcohol-free opportunities for students during late night evening and weekend hours.
Previous Late Night activities have attracted large crowds of students, including Think Fast Trivia, Feb. 5, where more than 150 students answered trivia questions and competed in singing and dancing competitions.
Bingo, held March 5, drew an even bigger crowd of more than 330 students competing against each other to win cash prizes. Most recently, on March 25, more than 125 students gathered on the fourth floor of the DeNaples Student Center to attend Craft Night, a Late Night Event organized by The University of Scranton Programming Board (USPB) Mission and Identity Team, co-chaired by students Elyse McCabe of North Wales and Mark Wehrenberg of Saylorsburg.
At the event, tables set up throughout the fourth floor of the DeNaples Center were covered with paint, paint brushes and other art supplies for students to decorate terra cotta pots, wooden frames, quotes and crosses, and votive candle holders.
Other tables were covered with sand and sand art bottles and string for making friendship bracelets. Kathleen Thomas of Bryn Mawr, a junior counseling and human services major described Craft Night as “an awesome stress-reliever” and Patricia Cermignano of Ardmore, a junior marketing major, said “craft night was a great end to a busy week.”
Future Late Night events include a Sports Challenge set for April 8 in The Long Center. Starting at 10 p.m. there will be free throw shooting contests, speed pitching and inflatable games.
On Friday, April 9, Quizzo will be held on the first floor of the DeNaples Center and a Spelling Bee will be held on April 10.
The Late Night Programming Committee includes Anitra McShea, dean of students; Monica Thomas, Ph.D., director of the Center for Health Education and Wellness; Jane Johnson, associate director of intramurals/recreation; Alexa Simeone, assistant director of student activities and orientation; and Amber Cardamone, area coordinator for residence life.
