Outdoor Intramural Rosters Due by March 10

Rosters for outdoor intramurals are due to the Recreation Office — Byron Complex, main entrance — by Wednesday, March 10. Among the leagues being offered are co-rec softball, men's and women's soccer, co-rec ultimate (competitive and recreational divisions). The $10 forfeit fee must be included with your roster. For more information regarding rules or eligibility, visit the Recreation Office. Outdoor leagues will start the week of March 22.

Course for Participants in Service/Study Programs

Have you had the experience of spending time among the economically disadvantaged? Do you seek ways of integrating what you experienced into your life, your major and your future career?
 
INTD 284 Integrating Your Immersion Experience, to be offered for the first time in Fall 2010, will provide the opportunity for students to reflect on, process and analyze what they have experienced in a variety of ways, leading to the development of an action plan. It may be taken for one or three credits, and assignments will vary based on the number of credits chosen.

To be eligible, students must have completed either a service trip of at least one full week, or a relevant study abroad course or program between June 2009 and August 2010. Mr. & Miss Scranton Competition Slated for March 23

The University of Scranton Programming Board Publicity Committee is hosting its next big event, the Mr & Miss Scranton Competition, Tuesday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the DeNaples Center’s Moskovitz Theater. 

Come a cheer for your friends as they show off in a fashion show, a talent performance and answer questions about The University of Scranton. USPB hosts Craft Night March 24

Theology Honor Society Seeks New Members

Undergraduate or graduate students who meet the established criteria are invited to apply for membership in The University of Scranton chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa, the National Honor Society for Religious Studies/Theology. Criteria include the completion of 12 credits in Theology/Religious Studies with the average of all your theology courses at least 3.5 and your overall GPA at least 3.0.

For more information or to pick up an application, contact Marie Gaughan, Theology department secretary, at 941-6309. The Theology department is located in St. Thomas Hall, room 361. Applications must be completed by Wednesday, March 31.

Gallagher Koster Now Accepting Scholarship Applications

Gallagher Koster is proud to announce that applications are being accepted for the 2010 Gallagher Koster Health Careers Scholarship Program. All eligible full-time undergraduate students majoring in a healthcare-related field, beginning their third or fourth year (of a four-year program) in Fall 2010, are encouraged to apply.

Since 2001, 40 students have received this annual award to continue their studies toward a career in a healthcare-related field. As the program has continued to expand, additional awards and increased award amounts have been added to reflect Gallagher Koster's commitment to students. This year, there will be five awards available, each in the amount of $5,000.

The Health Careers Scholarship Program Application is available online, and is to be filled out directly on our website, http://www.gallagherkoster.com. All eligibility information, supplemental materials and frequently asked questions can also be found on the Web site. Please note that there are no paper copies available — all information is online only. 

The application deadline is May 17.

Class of 2010 Shamrockin’ Eve!

Seniors, get ready for parade day with The Second Annual Shamrockin' Eve!  

Join your classmates and recent alumni Friday, March 12, from 8:30 to 11 p.m. in the Byron Recreation Complex for entertainment by Blackthorn, food, beer, wine, and soda — all included with your ticket purchase.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in the DeNaples Center (Cash or Royal Card) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, through March 10, from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased Thursday, March 11, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and during the evening March 9 and 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. (Royal Card not accepted during evening hours.)

Writing Center Posts Hours for Spring 2010

The Writing Center, located on the fifth floor of St. Thomas Hall, room 588D, has posted its hours for the spring. 

The center's hours are as follows:

Mondays — 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. 
Tuesdays — 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. 
Wednesdays — 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. 
Thursdays — 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. 
Fridays — 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Financial Assistance for Summer Internships in Public Policy Available

Attention full-time sophomores and juniors: Financial Assistance for Summer Internships in Public Policy is now available. You are invited to apply for the 2010 Scully Scholars Award which provides a full-time University student with $6,000 in financial assistance to pursue a summer internship in public policy and honor the memory of legendary professor of history and political science, Timothy H. Scully.

Gilman International Scholarship Accepting Applications

The Gilman International Scholarship is pleased to announce the opening of the Fall 2010 online application.

The eligibility requirements are as follows:
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student at a two-four U. S. Institution
  • United States citizen
  • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
  • Participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks and no more than an academic year
  • Receiving academic credit
  • Study in any country not currently under U.S. State Department Travel Warning and Cuba
Summer 2010 and Fall/Academic Year 2010-2011 applications are accepted online at www.iie.org/gilman. For more information, call (713) 621-6300 ext. 25.

Deadline for submission is April 6. 

Recommendations for Peter S. Graybar Scholarship Sought

Recommendations for the 2010-2011 Peter S. Graybar Memorial Scholarship are being solicited. The scholarship will provide assistance for students entering their junior year next fall.

Recommendation forms and information sheets are available at http://matrix.scranton.edu/docs/graybar_scholarship.doc, or at the Financial Aid Office at 401 St. Thomas Hall. The deadline is Friday, March 26.

Summer/Fall 2010 Registration Information for Undergraduate Students and Advisors

Registration for Summer and Fall 2010 courses will begin for undergraduate students the beginning of April. Specific dates, as well as what students need to do in preparation for registration advising and to register by web, can be found in the e-mail sent to students and also on the Registrar’s Web page, www.scranton.edu/registrar.
 
What do undergraduate students need to do now?

First, pick up your registration materials at the following locations, on or after February 17:  
  • KSOM students at the KSOM Advising Center (Brennan Hall 206)
  • PCPS students at the PCPS Advising Center (McGurrin Hall 101)

  • CGCE students at the CGCE Office (O'Hara Hall 201)
  • CAS sophomores, juniors and seniors at the Registrar's Office (St. Thomas Hall 301).
  • CAS freshmen: The CAS Advising Center has set up an advising appointment for you.
 Pick up your appointment letter, along with your CAPP and registration forms, in the
 CAS Advising Center (St. Thomas 309).


Second, make and keep an advising appointment at your advising center or with your faculty advisor. [Special note to CAS freshmen: Since an advising appointment has already been made for you, you just need to pick up your appointment letter in the CAS Advising Center.]



Third, complete your registration worksheets and forms and then meet with your advisor to review your course selections. Your advisor will then provide you with your registration start date and term PIN needed to access web registration. [Note: You will also need your correct UIS PIN. If you do not know your UIS PIN, you may access the online self-service PIN reset program, or contact the Technology Support Center at
941-4357 prior to your initial date of registration.]
 

Fourth, be sure to clear any holds you may have on your account from the Bursar, Student Affairs, Library, Network Resources or Public Safety before your registration start date so that you can access the web registration system. Students who have holds on their account will not be able to register until they satisfy their obligations.

Ireland Scholarship Available

Are you from Northeastern Pennsylvania? Are you planning to study abroad in Ireland during the 2010 Fall or Spring Semesters?

Apply for the Dr. John H. Corcoran Scholarship for Study in Ireland sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Lackawanna County. In 1984, the Friendly Sons established a perpetual scholarship fund to finance academic study in Ireland by a college student. Since its inception, the scholarship has been given in alternate years to a student from The University of Scranton and Marywood University. 

Scholarship recipients must spend at least one semester at a college-level institution in Ireland and, upon return, discuss their experiences in Ireland with the executive committee of the Friendly Sons. The scholarship winner is chosen based on a GPA of 3.0 or above, services, activities, interests and work experience, and a personal statement and essay. 

Since 1984, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick has donated $42,000 to The University of Scranton through the scholarship program. Applications are available in the International Programs & Services Office located at 5110 Communications Wing, St. Thomas Hall.

Would you like to welcome prospective students to campus? Apply for a position in the Admissions Office. We are looking for local freshmen and sophomores with excellent interpersonal skills who have the following availability:

Summer: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.

The National Survey of Student Engagement Open

The Institutional Research Office is administering the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) this spring. The web-based survey is administered to a random sample of freshmen and seniors. The goal of the survey is to help the University maintain and improve institutional effectiveness. The results will be available in late summer 2010 and a results analysis will be available in fall of the same year.  

Please help support the Institutional Research Office and the University of Scranton by completing the survey, if you are a selected student; and encouraging student participation, if you are a faculty member.
