The Antonio Ciacca Trio Performs March 10
The Antonio Ciacca Trio will perform Wednesday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m at The University of Scranton's Houlihan-McLean Center (Mulberry Street at Jefferson Avenue in Scranton). Admission is free and it is open to the public.
World-renowned jazz pianist Antonio Ciacca will take the stage with his band, which “swings with a sense of fun,” according to Backbeat Magazine.
Ciacca acknowledges his bebop inspired style, characterized by a fast tempo and improvisation, has also been influenced by the passion and energy of gospel music. The Bologna conservatory graduate began his career playing with Art Farmer, James Moody, Lee Konitz, Jonny Griffin, and many others, was the pianist for Steve Lacy for seven years, and has toured extensively throughout the world with jazz legend Benny Golson. He also opens for Wynton Marsalis’ concerts in Italy.
Ciacca has proven himself on the world stage with performances at famous venues such as Pizza Express and Ronnie Scott's in London, the Blue Note in Milan, Alexander Platz in Rome, London Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival and the Village Vanguard.
Currently, Ciacca serves as director of programming for Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he works closely with artistic director Wynton Marsalis. He continues to perform around the United States and abroad. His latest recording, “Rush Life,” was released in 2009.

‘Iron Jawed Angels’ Teaches Women's History
In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Jane Kopas Women's Center, in collaboration with the Lackawanna County League of Women Voters, will show the film "Iron Jawed Angels" Thursday, March 11, at 7 p.m. in the Pearn Auditorium, Brennan Hall, room 228.
Katja von Garnier's "Iron Jawed Angels" tells the remarkable and little-known story of a group of passionate and dynamic young women, led by Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and her friend Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), who put their lives on the line to fight for American women's right to vote.
Swank and O'Connor head an outstanding female ensemble, with Julia Ormond, Molly Parker, Laura Fraser, Brooke Smith and Vera Farmiga, as a rebel band of young women seeking their seat at the table.
This true story has startling parallels to today as the young activists struggle with issues such as the challenges of protesting a popular President during wartime and the perennial balancing act between love and career. Utilizing a pulsing soundtrack, vivid colors and a freewheeling camera, von Garnier's driving filmmaking style shakes up the preconceptions of the period film and gives history a vibrant contemporary energy and relevance.
This event is free and is open to all members of the University of Scranton community. For more information, call 941-6194.

Donate Dresses to Cinderella’s Closet
Have a formal or prom dress taking up room in your or your daughter's closet? Donate it to Cinderella's Closet!
Sponsored by the Junior League of Scranton, Cinderella’s Closet is an annual event that occurs in April at the Scranton Cultural Center. The event helps high school girls have an opportunity to go to the prom in a dress of their choice and feel like the “belle of the ball” — all for less than $10.
With the cost of formal attire increasing, students and parents are likely to have difficulty affording this important night. The junior league believes students shouldn’t suffer the consequences of these growing prices.
Dresses should be of modern style, clean and in good condition — no 80s dresses please. Cinderella’s Closet also accepts formal footwear, jewelry and hair accessories. Bring back your dresses after Spring Break! Donations can be dropped off in The Community Outreach Office now through Wednesday, March 31. Our office is located in DeNaples 205B. For more information, contact Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.
Math SPIRAL Presents ‘What you never thought about Soduku!’ March 10
Come be a part of the Math SPIRAL — Students and Professors InteRacting And Learning! Join the Math Department for some conversation and refreshments, Wednesday, March 10, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. as Michael Scully will discuss the number of mutually orthogonal Sudoku Latin Squares. The meeting will be held in the Math Lab, St. Thomas 161.
Sudoku shares a property with Latin squares that a number can appear only once in a row and column. In addition, Sudoku has sub-squares that contain all the numbers one through nine in a 3x3 square. This SPIRAL will show how this extra property limits the number of Sudokus that can be overlaid on each other such that no ordered pairs occur twice. Students and faculty of all disciplines are welcome to attend. For more information, contact Dr. S. Muir at muellers2@scranton.edu or x6580.
