Presentation Today: Women and Feminism in Rwanda
Shirley Randell, Ph.D., will present a lecture sponsored by Office of Equity and Diversity and the Department of Women’s Studies Tuesday, March 2, in Brennan Hall.
Dr. Randell is founding Secretary General (2006-8) and mentor of the Vanuatu Association of Women Graduates and the Rwanda Association of University Women. She is currently serving as Coordinator of International Relations for RAUW. She was International Projects Convener for the Geneva-based International Federation of University Women in 2004-2007 and is now Vice President of International Federation of University Women (IFUW) for 2007-2010.
Dr. Randell is also a board member for the New York-based Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund.Born and raised in Australia, Dr. Randell is very much a global citizen. Her passion for women’s education, policy and gender mainstreaming have taken her to live and work in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka and Rwanda, to name a few. In her current role as Director of the Center for Gender, Culture and Development Studies, Kigali Institute of Education, (Rwanda), she oversees course creation and curriculum development and program management. She is also professor of education.
Dr. Randell’s academic credentials include a B.Ed in Education, Social Work, Anthropology & Comparative Religion (University of Papua New Guinea, 1973), a ME.d. (CCAE, now University of Canberra, 1979). Her thesis was on the “Social attitudes of PNG teenagers”; as well as a Ph.D. (University of New England, 1987). Her dissertation was centered on policy implementation in a federal political system.
