'Adopt a Grandparent Day’ Set for Feb. 28

Interested in service and helping the elderly? Sign up for the Adopt a Grandparent Day sponsored by the Community Outreach Office.

Economics Honor Society Accepting Applications

The International Economics Honor Society (ODE) is now accepting applications for membership from all students, both undergraduate and graduate. Criteria include a minimum of 12 credit hours of economics courses. The ODE induction dinner is scheduled for Thursday, May 6, in Brennan Hall 509. This year’s speaker is Jonathan Morduch of New York University. 

The deadline for returning applications is Friday, March 5.

Study Abroad Scholarship News

Are you from Northeastern Pennsylvania? Are you planning to study abroad in Ireland during the 2010 Fall or Spring Semesters?

Apply for the Dr. John H. Corcoran Scholarship for Study in Ireland sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Lackawanna County. In 1984, the Friendly Sons established a perpetual scholarship fund to finance academic study in Ireland by a college student. Since its inception, the scholarship has been given in alternate years to a student from The University of Scranton and Marywood University. 

Scholarship recipients must spend at least one semester at a college-level institution in Ireland and, upon return, discuss their experiences in Ireland with the executive committee of the Friendly Sons. The scholarship winner is chosen based on a GPA of 3.0 or above, services, activities, interests and work experience, and a personal statement and essay.

Since 1984, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick has donated $42,000 to The University of Scranton through the scholarship program. Applications are available in the International Programs & Services Office located at 5110 Communications Wing, St. Thomas Hall.

Kenya Summer 2010 Travel Course Scheduled

Apply for the Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Scholarship

The Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Scholarship for Diversity in Engineering & Information Technology is designed to promote the engineering and information technology profession to individuals from groups historically under-represented in these fields. The program has two facets:|

  • Through scholarship aid, Air Products hopes to help assist the recipient students to successfully complete their degrees and do so in a timely fashion without financial strain.
  • Scholarship recipients will receive consideration for internships and for employment following graduation.

Amount of Award: 
The scholarship program allows for one scholarship of $7,500 to be applied toward tuition and fees beginning in the 2010-11 academic year. Air Products intends to renew the award for one year (2011-12) provided the recipient maintains appropriate academic standards.

Eligibility Criteria:
Full-time undergraduate students majoring only in:
  • chemical engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • information technology (computer science, management information systems (MIS) and IST)
  • Will be enrolled as a JUNIOR in Fall of 2011
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Women and /or members of the following minority groups — American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
  • Accepted at, or currently attending one of 85 member colleges and universities of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania.

Admissions Office Seeks Student Workers

Would you like to welcome prospective students to campus? Apply for a position in the Admissions Office. We are looking for local freshmen and sophomores with excellent interpersonal skills who have the following availability:

Spring: Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Summer: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.

You must also be able to work select Saturdays and some breaks.

Volunteering Opportunity at the Leahy Clinic

The Leahy Community Health and Family Center is seeking volunteers in the Clothes Closet and Food Pantry. Food Pantry volunteers will compile nutritious, balanced bags of groceries for those who need food assistance, and volunteers in the Clothes Closet will help organize the items and welcome the clients. The hours of operation for the Pantry and Closet are Mondays from 4-5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and volunteers can opt to serve in one or both of these areas. Trip to Montreal Scheduled

The French club and the Department of World Languages and Cultures are organizing a weekend trip to Montreal April 23-25. The cost is $170 per person, and includes transportation and hotel room for two nights. The trip is limited to 46 people. 

Registration and non-refundable deposit of $50 is due by Wednesday, Feb 24, and the balance is due no later than March 10. For registration and information, contact Marion Denis at 570-815-7286 or denism2@scranton.edu.

The Making a Difference in Nursing Scholarship Fund

You are invited to apply for The Making a Difference in Nursing Scholarship Fund. The purpose of this award is to assist LPN Students who have financial need and have 60 credits completed in the nursing major. The scholarship is $2500.

Sharon Hudacek, professor of nursing, and her husband established this fund to assist LPN students to offset tuition charges at The University of Scranton. The scholarship is funded from book royalties and community donations that support nursing educations. We have recently been fortunate to receive funding from Northeast Golf Charities (Nationwide Golf Tournament — Glenmaura Country Club).

Applications are available in the Nursing Department and in The Financial Aid Office. The scholarship deadline is Monday, Feb. 22.

AICPA Scholarship Opportunities Available

The AICPA is pleased to offer several academic scholarships for students interested in accounting and business, including:

AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship — a joint program with Accountemps, awarding five $2,500 scholarships to students pursuing a degree in accounting, finance or information systems. 

John L. Carey Scholarship — $5,000 scholarships for up to 10 liberal arts or other non-business related degree holders preparing to enter a graduate accounting program.

AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students — financial awards of up to $5,000 for undergraduate and graduate minority accounting students.

AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students — up to $12,000 for nearly 20 full-time minority accounting doctoral students.

Mardi Gras at the Library set Feb. 16

Mardi Gras at the Library is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 8-11 p.m. in the Heritage Room (fifth floor). In addition to pizza, wings and other food, students can play Wii Fit, Rockband and Mario Kart. A prize drawing will also be held.

Networking Luncheon Slated for Feb. 18

The Office of Career Services and Alumni Society are sponsoring a Networking Luncheon Thursday, Feb. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the DeNaples Center. The cost for this program, including lunch, is $5. Students can use a meal swipe if you have a meal plan. There are three alumni occupational therapists and four alumni physical therapists scheduled to be in attendance. USPB Hosts Coffeehouse Feb. 17

The Programming Board’s Coffeehouse will host its first event of the semester, featuring Philadelphia singer-songwriter Matt Duke, on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. in the DeNaples Center’s Theater. The first 50 people in attendance receive free T-shirts. LCHFC seeks volunteers

Looking to fill some service-learning hours this semester? Become a volunteer at the Leahy Community Health and Family Center's Medical Clinic. The clinic needs volunteers and translators, especially from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Orientation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in McGurrin Hall.

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania is seeking Nursing and Physician Assistant Majors for the McLean Scholarship.

Who is eligible: This scholarship is open to all full time undergraduate students attending one of AICUP’s 84 institutions who are enrolled in a Nursing or Physician’s Assistant program. The student must also have at least a 3.0 GPA. Candidates should also be campus leaders and community volunteers.

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) is seeking students for the Commonwealth “Good Citizen” Scholarship.

Who is eligible: This scholarship is open to all full time undergraduate students attending one of AICUP’s 85 institutions, who has an extraordinary commitment to community service and who has demonstrated creativity in shaping his/her volunteer activities.

How to apply: Application forms are available at the Financial Aid Office. Return completed applications to your financial aid office for submission to AICUP. Please note that students should not send applications directly to AICUP- they will not be accepted.

Deadline to apply: All applications must be returned to your Financial Aid Office for submission to AICUP by April 6, 2010.

Foreign Language National Honor Society Enrolling New Members

The Theta Iota Chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma, is in the process of enrolling new members.

Requirements are the following:

— For full membership, two consecutive A or A-'s in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above.
— For associate membership, two consecutive B+'s or better in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above, or a noteworthy academic record in more than one language.  Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. 

All applications are individually screened. Only completed semester grades are considered. Application forms are available from Joyce Knott, Department Secretary, 301 O'Hara Hall, as well as from departmental faculty.

The induction ceremony and luncheon are scheduled for Tuesday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the DeNaples Center 405.

Inductees will receive their certificates of membership and society pins; graduating seniors will receive their gold honors cords.

Deadline for applications and payment of fee is Tuesday, April 20. The membership fee of $50 — cash or check — includes the luncheon. Applications without fees will not be considered. Please make checks to the University of Scranton and leave completed applications with Knott.

Fees will be returned to those students not accepted for membership.
