February 16, 2010: General News

Jefferson Avenue Fire Assistance Fund

As you may have seen or read, there was a fire in our neighborhood last week that damaged an apartment home in the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue. The fire left 10 people homeless, including two of our graduate students.

Thankfully, no one was injured but losses of personal property were incurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who were affected by the fire, especially members of the University community who are enduring this difficult time.

The University is already helping in various ways.  Moreover, many of you have contacted offices on campus asking how you might help. I am grateful for this characteristically Scranton response.

The Office of Student Affairs is coordinating donations to help those members of our University community left homeless by the fire. If you wish to make a donation you can write a check payable to The University of Scranton, noting that the contribution is to the Jefferson Avenue Fire Assistance Fund. The Student Affairs office is located in the DeNaples Campus Center – Suite 201.

Again, our sympathy goes out to all who are recovering from the effects of the fire.

The National Survey of Student Engagement Opens Feb. 22

The Institutional Research Office is administering the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) this spring. The NSSE opens on Monday, Feb. 22. The web-based survey is administered to a random sample of freshmen and seniors. The goal of the survey is to help the University maintain and improve institutional effectiveness. The results will be available in late summer 2010 and a results analysis will be available in fall of the same year.

Please help support the Institutional Research Office and the University of Scranton by completing the survey, if you are a selected student; and encouraging student participation, if you are a faculty member.

Donate Dresses to Cinderella’s Closet

Have a formal or prom dress taking up room in your or your daughter's closet? Donate it to Cinderella's Closet!

Sponsored by the Junior League of Scranton, Cinderella’s Closet is an annual event scheduled Wednesday, April 21, at the Scranton Cultural Center. The event helps high school girls have an opportunity to go to the prom in a dress of their choice and feel like the “belle of the ball” — all for less than $10.

With the cost of formal attire increasing, students and parents are likely to have difficulty affording this important night. The junior league believes students shouldn’t suffer the consequences of these growing prices.

Dresses should be of modern style, clean and in good condition — no 80s dresses please. Cinderella’s Closet also accepts formal footwear, jewelry and hair accessories. Bring back your dresses after Spring Break! Donations can be dropped off in The Community Outreach Office now through Friday, April 9. Our office is located in DeNaples 205B. For more information, contact Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.
