Admissions Office Seeks Student Workers

Would you like to welcome prospective students to campus? Apply for a position in the Admissions Office. We are looking for local freshmen and sophomores with excellent interpersonal skills who have the following availability:

Spring: Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Summer: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.

You must also be able to work select Saturdays and some breaks.

Volunteering Opportunity at the Leahy Clinic

The Leahy Community Health and Family Center is seeking volunteers in the Clothes Closet and Food Pantry. Food Pantry volunteers will compile nutritious, balanced bags of groceries for those who need food assistance, and volunteers in the Clothes Closet will help organize the items and welcome the clients. The hours of operation for the Pantry and Closet are Mondays from 4-5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and volunteers can opt to serve in one or both of these areas. Trip to Montreal Scheduled

The French club and the Department of World Languages and Cultures are organizing a weekend trip to Montreal April 23-25. The cost is $170 per person, and includes transportation and hotel room for two nights. The trip is limited to 46 people. 

Registration and non-refundable deposit of $50 is due by Wednesday, Feb 24, and the balance is due no later than March 10.

The Making a Difference in Nursing Scholarship Fund

You are invited to apply for The Making a Difference in Nursing Scholarship Fund. The purpose of this award is to assist LPN Students who have financial need and have 60 credits completed in the nursing major. The scholarship is $2500.

Sharon Hudacek, professor of nursing, and her husband established this fund to assist LPN students to offset tuition charges at The University of Scranton. The scholarship is funded from book royalties and community donations that support nursing educations. We have recently been fortunate to receive funding from Northeast Golf Charities (Nationwide Golf Tournament — Glenmaura Country Club).

Applications are available in the Nursing Department and in The Financial Aid Office. The scholarship deadline is Monday, Feb. 22.

Weinberg seeks two TechCons

The Weinberg Memorial Library is hiring two highly skilled student workers to serve as Library Technology Consultants (TechCons). TechCons must be technology-savvy, self-driven, reliable and able to work both independently as well as in a team environment. TechCons work approximately 10 hours each week, with flexible scheduling, and gain valuable real-world experience and training.

There are currently two TechCon positions open, in Digitization and Library Outreach. Job descriptions and preferred qualifications for both positions are posted on the Library's blog at http://bit.ly/WMLTechCons. AICPA Scholarship Opportunities Available

The AICPA is pleased to offer several academic scholarships for students interested in accounting and business, including:

AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship — a joint program with Accountemps, awarding five $2,500 scholarships to students pursuing a degree in accounting, finance or information systems. 

John L. Carey Scholarship — $5,000 scholarships for up to 10 liberal arts or other non-business related degree holders preparing to enter a graduate accounting program.

AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students — financial awards of up to $5,000 for undergraduate and graduate minority accounting students.

AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students — up to $12,000 for nearly 20 full-time minority accounting doctoral students.

Hosts for Royal Nights

The Admissions Office still needs hosts for the upcoming Royal Nights program. We have invited accepted students to spend a night on campus with a student host; that’s where you come in.  

The Royal Nighters will arrive on a Sunday between 3-4:30 p.m. and participate in planned activities that evening. On Monday, they will attend classes and leave in the late afternoon. We are looking for students who live on campus to host these guests in their rooms. Hosts meet students when they arrive on Sunday afternoon, have the option to participate in the different activities that evening, provide sleeping space, and help direct Royal Nighters to checkout on Monday afternoon. Hosts can be as involved with their Royal Nighter as they choose. Plus, you will receive two free movie tickets for each weekend you host. 

The dates of Royal Nights are:

— Sunday, Feb.14 - Monday, Feb. 15
— Sunday, Feb. 21 - Monday, Feb. 22 
— Sunday, Feb. 28 - Monday, March 1

Mardi Gras at the Library set Feb. 16

Mardi Gras at the Library is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 8-11 p.m. in the Heritage Room (fifth floor). In addition to pizza, wings and other food, students can play Wii Fit, Rockband and Mario Kart. A prize drawing will also be held.

Indoor Recreational Rosters Due

Indoor intramural rosters will be accepted until Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 11 p.m. in the Byron’s Recreation Office, and indoor activities begin the week of Feb. 14. Men's and women's basketball, co-rec volleyball, co-rec dodgeball, co-rec racquetball and co-rec table tennis are all offered this year.

Rosters for outdoor intramurals will be accepted until Wednesday, March 10, at 11 p.m. Outdoor leagues include co-rec softball, men's and women's soccer and co-rec ultimate frisbee. Outdoor activities will begin after spring break.

SPIRAL Hosts Event Feb. 10

Come be a part of the Math SPIRAL — Students and Professors InteRacting And Learning. Join the Department of Mathematics for some conversation and refreshments Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Math Lab, St. Thomas 161. During the event, junior Dave Gardner will discuss some math and physics aspects of bike riding in his talk "Galileo on Two Wheels: Why Does Newton Make Me Keep Pedaling This Thing?" All disciplines welcome. Networking Luncheon Slated for Feb. 18

The Office of Career Services and Alumni Society are sponsoring a Networking Luncheon Thursday, Feb. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the DeNaples Center. The cost for this program, including lunch, is $5. Students can use a meal swipe if you have a meal plan. There are three alumni occupational therapists and four alumni physical therapists scheduled to be in attendance. USPB hosts Dynamic Duo, Coffeehouse

LCHFC seeks volunteers

Looking to fill some service-learning hours this semester? Become a volunteer at the Leahy Community Health and Family Center's Medical Clinic. The clinic needs volunteers and translators, especially from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Orientation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in McGurrin Hall.

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania is seeking Nursing and Physician Assistant Majors for the McLean Scholarship.

Who is eligible: This scholarship is open to all full time undergraduate students attending one of AICUP’s 84 institutions who are enrolled in a Nursing or Physician’s Assistant program. The student must also have at least a 3.0 GPA. Candidates should also be campus leaders and community volunteers.

How to apply: Application forms are available at the Financial Aid Office. Return completed applications to your Financial Aid Office for submission to AICUP.

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) is seeking students for the Commonwealth “Good Citizen” Scholarship.

Who is eligible: This scholarship is open to all full time undergraduate students attending one of AICUP’s 85 institutions, who has an extraordinary commitment to community service and who has demonstrated creativity in shaping his/her volunteer activities.

How to apply: Application forms are available at the Financial Aid Office. Return completed applications to your financial aid office for submission to AICUP. Please note that students should not send applications directly to AICUP- they will not be accepted.

Deadline to apply: All applications must be returned to your Financial Aid Office for submission to AICUP by April 6, 2010.

Foreign Language National Honor Society enrolling new members

The Theta Iota Chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma, is in the process of enrolling new members.

Requirements are the following:

— For full membership, two consecutive A or A-'s in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above.
— For associate membership, two consecutive B+'s or better in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above, or a noteworthy academic record in more than one language.  Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. 

All applications are individually screened. Only completed semester grades are considered. Application forms are available from Joyce Knott, Department Secretary, 301 O'Hara Hall, as well as from departmental faculty.

The induction ceremony and luncheon are scheduled for Tuesday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the DeNaples Center 405.

Inductees will receive their certificates of membership and society pins; graduating seniors will receive their gold honors cords.

Deadline for applications and payment of fee is Tuesday, April 20. The membership fee of $50 — cash or check — includes the luncheon. Applications without fees will not be considered. Please make checks to the University of Scranton and leave completed applications with Knott.

Fees will be returned to those students not accepted for membership.
