The Jesuit Center sponsors and cooperates with a variety of programs designed to offer employees of the University the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Jesuit and Catholic educational traditions and to hone their skills in articulating and living out that understanding.

Ignatian Colleagues Program (ICP)

ICP draws its name from St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) who first committed Jesuits to the work of education in 1547.  Nominated by the presidents of their insitutions, ICP participants commit themselves to an 18-month process of learning, reflection and action culminating in a work-related project that advances his or her home institution’s mission.  The program is designed to develop mission-related leadership skills in dedicated lay men and women. 

AJCU Leadership Seminar

The Washington, DC-based Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities offers a two-phase leadership seminar, which meets for one week in two successive summers at Loyola University in Chicago.  Covering a wide range of topics – everything from finance and admissions to curriculum development and student affairs, from study abroad and service programs to faith formation and the hiring of a president – the Seminar is designed to address the many issues facing current academic and administrative leaders and the developing leaders who will guide Jesuit education into the 21^st Century.  

El Salvador Educational Pilgrimage

In 1989, six Jesuits and two laywomen working at the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El Salvador were brutally murdered as a result of the work of the Jesuits at the University.  They had written, talked, researched and taught about the necessary connections between Catholic faith and social justice -- not simply in theory but in the lived experience of the Salvadoran people.  Since 1989, the UCA and its continuing work has been a place of inspiration and even pilgrimage for men and women involved in Jesuit education across the globe.  The University of Scranton carries on that tradition through a yearly educational pilgrimage for faculty and staff sponsored by the Jesuit Center.

Catholic Intellectual Tradition Seminar

Moderated by a team of University of Scranton professors and academic administrators, this weeklong seminar is designed to provide faculty and staff a broad introduction to the Catholic intellectual tradition that gave rise to and continues to animate Catholic universities, including the University of Scranton.  Participants engage the Catholic intellectual tradition through consideration of texts highlighting the thought, art and spirituality of major figures of the early Church, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, as well as the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

Faculty Seminar in Ignatian Vision and Pedagogy

This weeklong seminar, offered to faculty every August, involves a set of assigned readings which are discussed under the direction of Fr. Ronald McKinney, SJ of the Philosophy Department.  The experience focuses on the Catholic and Jesuit nature of our educational enterprise.  The history, spirituality, and pedagogical theory of the Jesuits are explored in terms of how professors can better incorporate this vision into their University of Scranton classrooms.
