Keys to Successful Networking

What Networking Is, and Isn’t

Remember, networking is not about simply asking for an internship or job offer or sharing your resume. To network effectively you need to demonstrate a genuine interest in learning about your contact's field.

Then, once a rapport is established you may ask your contact about opportunities of which they are aware with their company or in their field. You may also ask them to refer you to another colleague who may be able to assist you.

Know yourself

Know your own interests, skills, abilities and values and be able to speak or write about them in a succinct manner.

Research the company and/or industry of the individual with whom you want to network. Learn as much as you can about trends, recent news, challenges or opportunities associated with the field.

Be confident

Convey a sense of confidence when communicating. Do not act as though you are asking to be helped or saved. Be ready to say what you have to offer and what you are hoping to find.

Be prepared

Decide whether you will communicate with the contact directly, in person or via phone, or indirectly by sending a letter via mail or email?

Prepare the questions you want to ask in advance and write them down, such as:

  • Tell me about your career path, how did you get to your current position?
  • What does your company look for when hiring?
  • What advice do you have for someone entering your field?
  • What types of opportunities are there at your company or in your field for someone with my experience?
  • Would you be willing to maintain a connection with me during my college career? As I transition to graduate school/work?
  • Is there anyone in your company/field that I can talk with about the type of work I’m interested in?
Keep good records of your contacts including correct spelling of name, title, employer, address, date and nature of contact.

Follow Up

After you’ve spoken to a contact be sure to send a thank you note.
Check in with your contact from time to time in order to maintain your relationship.

Let the Alumni Office know the outcome of your search and interactions with alumni contacts.
