For Dan Herr ’11, a Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology and Philosophy major, The University of Scranton was a natural fit.

As a toddler, the aspiring physician would shout out “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” whenever his father would say its more common acronym, C.P.R. Later, Dan spent hours of his childhood digging up his parents’ backyard, exploring nature a handful of dirt at a time.

So, when a family doctor – and Scranton alum – suggested that if Dan was serious about studying medicine, he should attend the University, Dan’s interest piqued. “He said that if that was the route I wanted to pursue, there wasn’t a better place for me to do it,” he recalls.

By sophomore year, Herr was certain he had made the right college decision.

“It struck me that this is home for me,” he recalls.

In addition to his studies in his major, Herr was a member of the University’s Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Honors Program. It was an enlightening experience for Herr and he explains, “The focus of the program is really on the formation of your soul.”

When he reaches graduation, it will be bittersweet leaving the institution he has grown so close to, but Herr knows he is well-prepared for the future – both professional and spiritually.

Herr will leave Scranton knowing, “I will have formed myself to into somebody who is capable of being a very good person and being very successful at the same time.”
