What are Streaming Media?

Streaming media are compressed audio and video files that allow the viewer to listen to or watch media in real time.  Content includes movies, documentaries, and film clips. This is usually delivered over the Internet to a personal computer.

Free Streaming Media

These free sites provide documentaries, lectures, and other educational content.

The quality of these films and lectures cannot be guaranteed since they are freely available on the Internet.

• Academic Film Archive of North America – www.afana.org – This site offers a list of films on animation, art, business, drama, guidance, science and math.  Most films are from the 1950’s and 60’s and are less than 30 minutes long.
• Academic Earth – www.academicearth.org - Offers thousands of video lectures from prestigious educators.
• Annenberg Learner – http://www.learner.org/index.html - Educational, online videos for teacher professional development  and classroom resources. Select a discipline and grade level to browse and then look for the VoD (Video On Demand) icon for the free content. Free registration is required.
• Ball State – http://libx.bsu.edu - The Digital Media Repository houses a collection of short films and news clips documenting Allied activity during World War II.
• CosmoLearning – www.cosmolearning.com  -  An educational website, designed for students and teachers, which contains thousand of documentaries and videos
• Forum Network - http://forum-network.org/ – A public media service of WGBH Boston, MA this site contains free online lectures on a variety of topics including Business and Economics, Education, and Literature and Philosophy. PBS and NPR lecture series are included.
• Greg Smith Sound Effects Collection - http://www.american.edu/library/mediaservices/greg_smith_collection.cfm - Greg Smith, who has 25 years experience as a Hollywood sound man, donated 1450 sound effects tracks to American University with the wish that they be freely available.
• Internet Archive – www.archive.org  - A digital library which contains audio recordings and text in addition to hundreds of thousands of moving images.
• MIT World - http://mitworld.mit.edu/ - Provides on-demand video of important public events at MIT.
• PBS – www.pbs.org/video - Provides selected videos from PBS programs including Masterpiece and Nova.
• PBS LearningMedia^TM - http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/ - Educators can register on this site which contains  access to thousands of digital resources that can be used in the classroom.
• Snag Films – www.snagfilms.com - Contains full-length documentary films and clips.
• Ted – www.ted.org -  View presentations given by leading authorities in a variety of fields.
• Yale University Library: Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies – www.library.yale.edu/testimonies – Offers powerful interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust.
• YouTube EDU – www.youtube.com/edu - Offers video lectures from over one hundred colleges and universities.
