Information Literacy Stipends

Purpose

The purpose of the stipends is to integrate Information Literacy into academic courses to develop the information literacy skills of students, such as differentiating between primary and secondary sources or constructing a search strategy.

The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) has developed Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as a guide to help faculty integrate information literacy into their courses.

Eligible Faculty

Faculty (either full-time or part-time) at The University of Scranton who want to strengthen students’ research skills in their discipline are eligible to apply for an Information Literacy stipend. Faculty members who have previously received an Information Literacy Stipend are generally not eligible to receive a stipend for the same course except in the case of major revisions to the course.

Application Procedure

Interested faculty members should submit a proposal, not to exceed two pages, that includes the following:

  • Course name and number
  • Student learning outcomes related to Information Literacy
  • Assessment plan to determine how student learning outcomes will be evaluated
  • Projected Timeline (Spring 2013 or Summer/Fall 2013)
  • Name of the Library faculty member with whom you will collaborate

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed by the Library Advisory Committee’s Information Literacy subcommittee for the following components:

  • Student learning outcomes related to Information Literacy
  • Assessment plan to determine how student learning outcomes will be evaluated
  • Collaboration with a Librarian

Application Deadline for Spring 2013 courses: Friday, November 2, 2012
Application Deadline for Summer/Fall 2013 courses: Friday, March 29, 2013

Stipend

A stipend of $1,000.00 will be awarded upon completion of the course, and submission by the faculty member of a report documenting the impact that the Information Literacy component had on student learning outcomes. Stipends are subject to taxes. Reports of the projects will be posted on the Library's Web site.
