Computer Use Policies

Computer Use These policies include those involving computer use, printing, photo copying, and network access in the Library.

Printing & Copying

There are three UniPrint stations (two on the First and one on the Second Floor) for printing from computer workstations. The Library subsidizes 200 prints for students in the Fall, an additional 50 for students enrolled in Intersession, and 200 additional prints in the Spring. Print jobs remain in the print queue for two hours. All print jobs from wireless connections are sent to the UniPrint station in the First Floor Pro Deo Room. For wireless printing instructions, click here. When the subsidized prints have been consumed, the UniPrint station debits the student's Royal Card account at $.07 per page. The duplex printer in the 24 hour study room charges one print (or $.07) for each side of a page printed. The subsidized prints roll over from Fall and Intersession into the Spring term but do not roll over into the next academic year.

Subsidized prints can be used for printing only, not for copying; funds for copies must come from the student’s Royal Card account. Copy machines are available for print and micro formats. Copies are $.07 per page. Copy machines are located on the First Floor in the Pro Deo Room, in the Bound Journal area and near the Microfilm/fiche area on the Second Floor.

A Value Transfer Station, located on the First Floor, is used to add money to Royal and Visitor Cards. Visitors can purchase Visitor copy/print cards at the Circulation Desk. Copy machines and microform reader/printers are equipped with card swipe readers for Royal and Visitor Cards.

Public Access Computer Policy

The University of Scranton, a private Jesuit institution, provides computer access to the public for research and educational use only. Leisure use of the computers—games, chat, social activities, loading or downloading programs—is prohibited. Guests may use the computer for one hour, even if other machines are available and no one is waiting. Members of the public may only use the three computers designated as "Public Terminals." These computers are located on the Second Floor on a round table. Any member of the public using a password protected computer will immediately be asked to leave the building. Infraction of any of these policies will result in the loss of a guest’s use of the Public Access computers.

Refund Policy

Report any printing, copying or microfilm malfunctions to the Reference Desk. For poor copies that are due to computer problems, the Librarian will either get a good copy for you or will contact the Circulation desk to have a refund placed on your RoyalCard.

Problems with photocopiers can  be reported to either the Reference or the Circulation desks. Refunds will be issued for equipment related problems.

If prints or copies are due to personal errors, refunds will be at the discretion of the Library administration.

Wireless Access

All floors in the library have wireless access points. The following measures were implemented to make the wireless network more secure from viruses and worms that damage your computer and inhibit the network.

All University of Scranton students, faculty, and staff members may use the ROYALAIR wireless network if their computer meets the following requirements:

Hardware Requirements: Network access requires a laptop computer with an internal or external industry standard Wi-Fi wireless 802.11b or 802.11g adapter. External adapters require an installation process according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Software Requirements: Before granting access to the wireless network you computer must meet the following requirements.
  • Windows XP SP2/SP1 or Windows 2000 SP4 Operating System
  • The removal of any existing antivirus software (Norton Symantec, McAfee)
  • The installation of the University’s version of McAfee (ResNet and all required updates)
  • The Clean Access Agent
  • Microsoft Critical Updates installed
  • A valid University of Scranton Email username and password

Wireless Adapter Configuration: To access the network you need to configure your adapter with the following settings. Each manufacturer’s configuration is different and you will need to review the documentation that came with your computer.

Network Name or SSID
ROYALAIR (Must use uppercase letters)
Profile Name May be optional; we recommend ResNet
Network Authentication Open
Data Encryption Disabled

After configuring your wireless network card, you can connect and authenticate via the Clean Access Agent using your University email username and password. Computers that meet these requirements are granted full network access. If your computer fails the validation process, your network access is limited to a series of guided steps to download the required software. All required software is available for downloaded using this limited access.

Guest Network: Visitors to the Library may use the ROYALGUEST wireless network to access the Internet from a laptop. Search for the ROYALGUEST network using your wireless card program in order to connect to this network. Upon accessing the Internet, visitors will need to agree to the Terms of Use for the guest network. For more information about the guest network, click here
