• KNOW THE FINANCIAL AID POLICIES

DID YOU KNOW…..The U.S. Department of Education requires educational institutions measure students’ progress toward a declared educational objective.  Effective July 1, 2011, institutions were required to add additional criteria in this determination, which is outlined in our Comprehensive Guide to Financial Aid Programs.    Please review this publication to be aware of our Policies and Procedures.

• Father Sweeney Family Outreach Program
  (Very Rev. Sweeney, S.J. Family Outreach Program)
  The Rev. Sweeney, S.J. Award is dedicated to the Very Rev. James P. Sweeney, S.J., Provincial of the Society of Jesus’ New York-Maryland Province when Bishop O’Hara invited the society to assume administration of The University of Scranton. The program reflects the University’s commitment to our students and families that have been negatively impacted by recent economic conditions and contains the following:
  • Responsiveness to reductions in family income due to unemployment, underemployment and other losses of income. The Financial Aid Office provides Special Condition forms that provide families an opportunity to update income information when current year income is less than what was collected on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Financial Aid Office will review and verify updated information to determine if any increases can be made to need-based federal, state and University of Scranton financial aid programs.
     
  • The Rev. Sweeney Grant will be used to supplement students’ regular financial aid packages based on the reporting of families’ financial difficulties. The grant is intended to provide immediate short term assistance. Renewal of the grant will be based on a family’s continued financial difficulties.
     
  • Financing counseling will be provided to families requesting special assistance to meeting their financial educational expenses. Financial Aid and Bursar staff will work with students and their families on the development of financing plans, which will include a combination of federal student and parent loans and may allow for the development of special payment plans outside of the University’s normal payment policy.

• Students should review their Financial Aid Status on the Self-Service UIS system and complete and/or submit any outstanding documents that are still required.
   
• Students who did not file a FAFSA for 2011-2012 to obtain a Federal Direct Loan, can still complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
   
• Alternative Loan Processing -- As of February, 14, 2010, federal regulations are requiring lenders who offer Educational Alternative Loans to follow new processing requirements. These new requirements could delay the receipt of Alternative Loan approvals and disbursements for at least 30 days. Please plan accordingly so these delays do not interfere with registration.                                                                                                                                                     
• Graduating students who have borrowed under any of the Federal Student Loan Programs will be required to complete Exit Loan Counseling.  You can complete this requirement and learn valuable information about loan repayment and deferments      at the National Student Loan Data System website.  Click on Exit Counseling.

2013-2014

2013-2014 University financial aid renewal information will be mailed to students’ home addresses in December along with email notification to students’ University email accounts. Anyone wishing to be considered for need-based grants, loans and work-study must complete all required financial aid applications each year.

Students who filed for federal aid for 2012-2013 will also receive a renewal notification from the Department of Education. This notification will be sent to the email listed on the previous Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) or to the home address. FAFSA ON THE WEB Worksheets are available on-line at www.fafsa.gov or at the Financial Aid Office after January 1, 2013.

Remember, all need-based aid recipients must apply for financial aid every year and meet the financial aid academic progress policy requirements outlined in our Comprehensive Guide to Financial Aid Programs found on our website. The deadline for filing for 2013-2014 aid is April 15, 2013. Applications received after the deadline will be considered for University aid on a funds-available basis.  Aid eligibility for returning students will be determined after Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress is reviewed following the Spring 2013 semester. 

Veteran’s Benefits

Students eligible for financial benefits from the Veterans Administration must complete and submit a Request for Certification form to the Registrar's Office prior to each term that you wish to use your Veterans educational benefits. This will prompt the Registrar's Office to send the VA your enrollment certification for the term.

• Click Veterans Request for Certification Form under the Student University Links channel
  
  After you have submitted this form, you will receive an email confirmation.

ROTC Scholarships, Leadership and Careers

The Military Science Department provides students with leadership training and opportunities that are highly recognized, sought after, and rewarded by the civilian sector. Qualifying students can expect exciting career opportunities as an officer in the Army in a wide range of specialties. Army ROTC provides students with many exciting opportunities to gain valuable hands-on experience that will enhance their college career. Many students that become involved in ROTC qualify for full scholarships. These benefits include tuition, book money, and a subsistence stipend. Additionally, students who participate in Army ROTC may also be eligible for a University Leadership minor.
