Meet the CTLE Staff

James Muniz

Reading Enrichment Specialist/
Academic Development Program Director

My responsibilities involve helping students succeed at the learning process. Reading becomes one of the key elements of students’ successful learning. Students spend approximately 80% of their time in study reading. Study reading must be efficient, purposeful, and active. I help students evaluate their reading skills to gauge how they measure up to these standards.

Based on this evaluation, I work with students to improve their reading skills. Improving reading skills can involve exploring learning strategies that complement reading. I try to present as many strategy options as possible to students so that they can become efficient learners.

Students constantly hear the admonition that the responsibility for their education is their own. While this statement rings true, students must also realize that they are not “on their own.” The University has placed many support structures at the disposal of students. These support structures help students to meet their responsibilities, and successful students seek out the help they need to meet their responsibilities.

While I have been at the University of Scranton, I have noticed that one factor impacts student outcomes more than any other, how “smart” students work. Working smart entails students managing the factors that impact success. These factors include learning strategies, motivation, social and physical environments, and much more. The professionals at the CTLE can help students explore all the factors necessary for success.
