Charles E. Kratz

Dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library
and Information Fluency

 

Charles E. Kratz is dean of libraries at the University of Scranton, a position he has held since 1991. Prior to his current position, he was assistant dean of public services at the Hofstra University from 1985 – 1991. He served as Associate University Librarian at Rider University from 1982 – 1985 and served as head of public services and assistant head of public services at the University of Missouri, Kansas City from 1979 – 1982. Kratz serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Scranton.

Kratz received his bachelor’s of arts in history and his master’s of arts in American history from the University of Notre Dame, and his master’s of library science from the University of Maryland.

Among his ACRL activities are service as 2003 President’s Program Committee Chair (2001 – 2003); 2003 National Conference Steering Committee (2001 – 2003); Colleagues Subcommittee Chair (2001 – 2003); 2001 National Conference Steering Committee (199 – 2001); Poster Sessions Subcommittee Co – Chair (1999 – 2001); University Libraries Section, Organization & Bylaws Committee (1993 – 95); University Libraries Section, Policy and Planning Committee (1991 – 93); Instruction Section, Clearinghouse Committee (1986 – 90).

Service with ACRL Chapters include ACRL Delaware Chapter Ad Hoc Committee on Membership (2003 – 2005); ACRL Delaware Chapter Legislative Day Activities (2000 – 2002); ACRL/NY Metropolitan Chapter Vice President/President – elect (1991 – 93) , Symposium Planning Committee (1987 – 93), Newsletter Editor (1988 – 91); ACRL/NJLA College & Univ. Section Newsletter Editor, 1982 – 85; ACRL/NJLA College & Univ. Section, Legislative Committee Chair (1982 – 83). Kratz is a member of the ACRL-NY Greater Metro, ACRL New Jersey, ACRL Delaware Valley PA, ACRL Eastern New York, and the ACRL Western PA Chapters.

Other ALA activities include service on ALA Council (1999 – 2005); on the LAMA Board of Directors (1992 – 1999) where he served as LAMA President (1997 – 1998) as well as on several LAMA committees; ALA Awards Committee (1998 – 2002), Chair (2000 – 2001); Lippincott Award Jury Chair (2003 – 2004); Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award Jury (2000 – 2001), Chair (2001 – 2002); ALA Executive Director Search Committee (1997 – 1998); Bessie Boehm Moore Award Jury (1990 – 91); ALA, H. W. Wilson Library Staff Development Grant Jury Chair (1989 – 90); President of the New Members Round Table (1984 – 85); member of the Freedom to Read Foundation and member of Reforma.

In state and regional associations, Kratz has served as President of the PALINET Board of Trustees (1998, 1999, 2001) and as Vice President (1997). He has been a member of the Board of Directors, Northeastern Pennsylvania Library Network since 1991. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Library Association and Pennsylvania Academic Library Cooperative Initiative. And he is newly elected member of the PALCI Board (2005 – 2008).

Kratz is the current President of OCLC Members Council (2003 – 2005) where he has served as PALINET delegate since 1999. Kratz was President of the Association of Jesuit College & University Libraries Directors Conference in 1999.

Kratz’s honors include Beta Phi Mu Honor Society (1976), the American Library Association’s Library Administration & Management Association Certificate of Achievement Award in 2001, and other awards. Publications include “How To Know Your Staff's Needs.” In: Staff Development: A Practical Guide, 3rd edition (2001) and The Personnel Manual: An Outline for Libraries (1994) as well as other journal articles and book reviews.
