MEMORANDUM

11/09/10

TO:         Members of the University Community
FROM:   Christopher M. “Kip” Condron
              Chair, Board of Trustees
DATE:     November 9, 2010
RE:          Update on the Presidential Search

Thanks to the work of your representatives on the Search Committee, we have gathered excellent feedback from alumni, students, faculty, and professional, clerical and maintenance staff regarding the characteristics that you would like to see in the next president and the challenges that you believe our next president will face. Summaries of these comments are available in Challenges Facing and Characteristics for the Next President.

Your voice is important. The characteristics and challenges you shared through the listening process will guide all of our interactions with candidates, providing the foundation for our assessment of each candidate’s strengths and fit.

As noted earlier, we have retained the services of Dr. Jamie Ferrare, managing principal and senior search consultant at AGB Search, Washington, D.C. With more than a decade of experience in the search business, Dr. Ferrare has significant experience working with Catholic higher education and, more specifically, Jesuit colleges and universities. He will assist the Search Committee and Board in attracting and vetting candidates, conduct deep background reviews and reference checks, and provide counsel to the Search Committee and Board through the successful completion of the search.

We remain in the preliminary vetting phase of our search, having identified a select group of Jesuit candidates for more in-depth consideration. Coordinated by Dr. Ferrare, the vetting process is designed to identify plausible candidates. Once we have established our pool of plausible candidates, all members of the Search Committee will receive complete materials on the candidates and will take part in confidential interviews.

Please be assured that the Search Committee and Board are fully aware of the interest the University community has in this important search. Our goal is not simply to hire Scranton’s next president; it is to launch a successful presidency. We appreciate your enthusiastic support and will continue to share updates in the weeks ahead.
