MEMORANDUM

10/13/10

TO:        Members of the University Community
FROM:  Christopher M. “Kip” Condron,  Chair, Board of Trustees
DATE:   October 13, 2010
RE:        Update on the Presidential Search Process

As I mentioned when we announced the search process in September, we will regularly update the University community on our progress. All elections for members of the Search Committee are now complete, and the Committee held its first meeting on October 6, on campus. Our initial conversation was excellent, and I know that my fellow trustees share my gratitude to the members of the Search Committee for their willingness to be part of this vital process.  Once again, the Board has decided first to seek a qualified Jesuit to serve as our next President. We will consider other candidates only if this initial search is unsuccessful.

As a broadly representative group, the Search Committee provides the Board of Trustees with insights from across the University community.  To broaden this perspective even more, I have asked each representative on the Search Committee to poll their respective constituencies to identify both the characteristics that they would like to see in the next president and the challenges that they believe the next president will face.  In addition to the formal steps members of the Search Committee will undertake, I encourage you to reach out directly to your representative to share your thoughts. Our hope is for this listening process to be completed by October 20, and we look forward to reviewing and considering the results.

We will share additional updates in the weeks ahead. In addition, we have launched a website at www.scranton.edu/presidentialsearch to provide communication and information related to the search. The site can also be reached from a link on the University’s homepage.
